Thought this might be a fun topic to discuss...

Yesterday the Brewers and Twins faced-off in their 1948 uniforms:

Would you like to see umpiring crews also get in on the throwback action several times a season? Of course, the PU would use modern-day equipment, like the players do.

Personally, no.  Depending how old-school they went I would imagine it would be hard to move around with all that stuff on and the heat would become a pretty big factor.

I think it would be kind of cool, at least cosmetically, with modern materials and equipment to address the valid concerns that MP notes above.

I think it might be interesting!  The players would have heat issues also if they used the old materials; they may use more modern materials.  The umpires could also.

Of course skip the balloon!  They could just be Bill-Klem style (inside protector).

Do we really need to see AL umpires in those red jackets from the 70's again?

Tremendous marketing opportunity, perhaps. We're not privy to MLB sales #s, but I'd wager umpire-related gear is substantially less lucrative than team-specific. For instance, the Memorial Day camo hats probably sold very well amongst those with team logos while the MLB logo cap probably falls significantly below whichever Team #30 happens to be.

I now have to re-learn how to tie a bowtie! Ohmygoshthat'ssoawesome. I definitely would like to have a Vintage Day, or at least a Vintage Game, at CDP (not that I have any say in it). The founder is so particular about the players wearing red or blue, and featureless knee-high pants (no stripes, piping, etc.), that it just screams, "Make this game a throwback!" I keep looking whimsically through eBay and Craigslist trying to find a decent-shape vintage mask that I can rehab and refit to serve reliably in a Vintage game.

It would just be my luck, though, that I wouldn't be PU -- I'm too young-looking and svelte. ;) I'd be one of the BU's for sure. Our crew would moonlight as a barbershop quartet for singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at the 7IS.
