I have a pair of Wilson shin guards. I have done 2 games behind the plate. The first night I had a bit of rubbing just above my ankle. The second night, much the same... but I have rubbed it pretty raw where I have to big sores (one on each ankle) and I have some fluid and swelling.

Do I need to tighten them, loosen them, or does anyone have a clue what I need to do?

It is rubbing through my socks.  I was even wearing a thicker sock the second night.

Check thee area of the shin guards for anything that may catch you. Maybe they have worn or there is a manufacturing error. One time I had a shoe wear in such a way that it cut the back of my foot right above the heel. So make sure your equipment is in good shape before anything else.

On some models the padding is held in with Velcro. Try adjusting the padding. I did this on my platinums. Which model do you have?

Maybe they are adjustable to a little smaller? Sound to long? I wear them with plate shoes... I am pretty sure it is the shin guards and not the shoes.

Hey TN Coach, I have the platniums and I have the straps adjusted really tight. When I stretch them over they barely are able to hook in and then I backed them off just a hair and I haven't had any problems with them staying in place with no rub. Hope this helps you.

I use underarmour leggings and it helps. The comfort of not having the shing guard rub against your skin in this heat Texas is a plus.

Don't wear cotton socks.  Wear long compression shorts and crew length or longer moisture wicking socks.  I prefer "dri fit" from Nike on the bases, Force Three for my plates.

My order:

1.  Honigs compression shorts

2.  Moisture wicking socks (Force Three) for the plate

3.  Long compressions

4.  Nutty buddy jock

5.  Nutty buddy

6.  Plate pants

7.  Plate shoes

8.  Leg guards.  (right leg first)

9.  Belt while weaving in two ball bags.

Never had leg rubbing/chafe issues.  Not even one time.

I vary from johnnyg08 in that I put my socks (long ones that go to just under the knee) on over the compression tights - gives a bit of a friction surface so that my shin guards don't spin or slide around.  I also don't bother with the compression shorts anymore, I find the NB to fit a bit better without the extra layer under the tights.

Only time I have had any issue was rubbing behind the knee, compression tights fixed that.

I wear the UmpAttire Eversafe long socks, but with the platinum shin guards I use the ankle and calf straps, the top strap, but I run the floating knee strap under the pad and I go with 3 straps. No back of the knee rub and they stay in place.

And I would make sure they are good and tight so they don't move around and rub you.

Compression pants solved my problems with rashes and abrasions caused by the straps rubbing my legs.

If your ankles are getting rubbed raw, in addition to compression pants, you might want to consider purchasing some ankle supports/braces that are made of flexible material. They slip on/off very easily but in addition to helping prevent rubbing, they will support your ankles too! You can kill two birds with one stone.
