Players Required to Wear Protective Cup?

Under NFHS rules, are ANY players required to wear cups?

I ask because we had our LF batting the other evening.  Batted ball comes up and catches him.  Umpire warns our coach all players must wear protective cups and that he could have restricted him to the dugout.

To be honest, I do not recall seeing a rule that players are required to wear a protective cup.  Maybe there is one, but I can't pin point one.  I have google searched.  I have always made sure my catcher has one by simply asking him.

I have also searched to see if it is a TSSAA rule (our state association in Tennessee).  I haven't caught a rule there either.

I don't have my book with me. It is laying on my desk at school. Could you tell me what it says basically? I will get it tomorrow.

If I recall, the catcher must, but when it was a batter and LF, that has me thrown off...

TNCoach,

Only the catcher is required to wear a protective cup by rule.

The umpire was making stuff up.

It's certainly not a bad idea for other players to wear one, but it's not a rule.

Didn't think so...  That was why I was perplexed.  Made me wonder if it was a state rule, but I can't find anything.

Why would you be perplexed? Based on some of your previous posts the "baffle em with BS technique" is common in your neck of the woods. Kudos to you for trying to get it right.

Me:  "Are your players properly equipped and using legal equipment?"

Coach:  "Yes"

End of story.

Most of my stories come from my coaching middle school (many times with umpires who are not part of the association).

This was a high school game, and the umpires are from the association.

The umpire just happened to ask because of his reaction to the ball coming up off the dirt hitting him.

See, I think our state association said that someone warming up the pitcher must have one, but the head coach usually does this.  I have a few times myself.  I don't think the head assistant has...

I am pretty sure that this isn't a NFHS rule per se, either... I just think TSSAA has made it a rule.

Don't let em pick on you tnc. Go sic Dale on em tnc. It's only the "truck stops" that seem to use this technique that are in trouble now. Oops, this is an umpire site, let me get back on topic.

I bet a lot umpires like some of the best selling "pumpkin juice" in the world that comes out of Lynchburg TN after the game, to relax and tell war stories, and that's no BS.

There is no rule that says everybody has to wear a cup. There is book rule that says he can restrict a player for anything EXCEPT being an illegal sub. Any other restriction is something they are pulling out of an ugly orifice. I wish umpires would quit trying. Safety rules, bat throwing, jewelry, and other rules are warn and eject. Anything else is an ejection or don't do that.

What about the kid warming up F1 between innings while F2 puts on his gear?

Read the rule book. It in there in 1.5.4.

Rule 1.5.4 - if he crouches he must wear the required mask / helmet and a cup.  If its an adult he doesnt need to wear any of that.
