Some guys in my chapter set up in B with 2 outs, but lecture the rest of us that they're good enough to do that and wouldn't recommend it for others.

How close to 1B do you have to start in order to call a "force" out at 1B?   I don't know the logic of starting in B, but it sounds like they are cheating to 1B.   You have zero time to get angle in a pickoff to 3B.   You have all the time in the world to get angle and distance to 1B on a ground ball in the infield.

Someone needs to explain to me how B is an advanced mechanic or even valid mechanic with R2,R3.

The claim is that the play is going to come to first rather than any other base, and B is the best place to get that.  I can almost agree if F1 is in the windup, but I feel more comfortable in C.

With 2 outs the play should (I've seen that theory shot to hell though) go to 1st and in that situation I think it's fine to move back to B, but I wouldn't talk down to the membership and say that I'm good enough to do that but you aren't.  I prefer to call it an "Advanced or Optional Mechanic".

The theory is they shouldn't be picking off or throwing behind a runner in that situation and with runners moving on contact the defense should get the "sure out" at 1st, so umpires could move to B in that situation.  Same as I would recommend if there are runners on 3rd or 2nd & 3rd and the infield is playing in, I would move behind the 2nd baseman in a line between the corners of 2nd base (don't know if this description makes sense...the 1st & 3rd base side corners of 2nd base...make sense???); they are telling you they are either throwing home or looking the runners back and throwing to 1st.

I just started using this at the beginning of the season, but only with familiar college guys that I know have worked it before.  I guess I felt like if I tried it while working with them and ran into any real problems I would have somebody that is familiar with it to cover it with after the game.  So far I haven't run into anything that has been problematic, and as MidAm points out, most of the time your going to get the expected play, but I'm waiting for that time when it goes funny to see how it all works out.

All of them (3) have referred to it as an "advanced" mechanic, but none have come across as saying it like you have to be as good as them or anything of that nature.

I'm still much more comfortable in C since I feel like everything from there happens on instinct.  This one will have to grow on me I think.

I split my time between the two. If the F5 is back, pitcher is LH or he uses a wind up, I do to B. If not,I am in C. I figure out takes me out of the SS/R2 mix. It has nothing to do with first,I just prefer B whenever possible. In six or seven seasons it hasn't bit me yet.

A good umpire can make either position work.

Angle, good timing and judgement are the keys, not where you start from. I am in B with two outs. I am I c with zero or 1 out. I orient my body toward the third base dugout. Chest facing third base dugout from the B position. Umpires love to be the guy in the know. The guy with the answer.

It is an ugly part of umpiring that I would like to see gone. Lets stop putting our fellow umpires down and let's all get better together.

With a left-handed batter and 2 outs, I stay in C.  Better view for a check-swing appeal, and out of the LH batter's power alley.

Right-handed batter, I go to B.

At the higher levels, the 3rd baseman is playing deep in this situation so not much worry about a back-pick or pitcher pick off to 3rd.
