I was at the Florida State-Virginia Tech game yesterday.  Between innings, I saw U3 taking off the sleeves of the jacket of the PU.  Nothing too weird here, with a CP on, it could be hard to do yourself.  But what I see next is that U3 takes the sleeves, put them into his back pocket and continues with the game.  I thought that was strange, and wouldn't be something I would do.  Would any of you do this?

I would have given my sleeves to the first base coach. Isn't one of the reasons they are there? To collect accessories.

It isn't the helping him with taking them off that is the problem, it is the pocketing of them by U3 that is the problem.  I guess my problem with this is if I did this during a game, I might forget they were there.  I guess this is different in college where they get a changing room and easier to go "oh hey Joe, here are your sleeves."

 

Really, not that big of a deal.  I was probably the only one in the crowd to notice it.

I had heard of the PU for the first game from somewhere. So I checked and he worked the Regionals and alternate CWS last year. Then I googled them all. Plenty of experience on this crew. All made it to the AAA International League before being released and now working D1 baseball. They may be the worst umpires out there but I kind of doubt it. They probably did not want to give it to a player and then forget and have to go chase it down between games, especially if they had a lot of close plays that had the team with the sleeves PO'd. Just put it in your own pocket as the BU and give it to PU after the game.

I thought they did a good job calling the game, just saw this as strange, but I guess it is alright.  I just was thinking why doesn't PU put them in his pocket?

Yes I would do that.  Obviously the dressing room is locked and/or not accessible so the 3rd base umpire was doing what's called "being a good partner".  The plate guy has got enough to worry about working a D-I conference plate.  It's not like he's only got 2 baseballs in his "pouch".  There's no place for him to put them.  

 

I guess he should have brought his supply bucket on the field for such an occasion.............................

OK, I guess my thoughts on this are wrong, live and learn.  That is why I posted it here, it looked funny to me, but those with more experience (wisdom) have shown me it is not.

Yeah this isn't that big of a deal.  I went in the locker room between innings of a college game a few weeks ago and put another layer of clothing on because I was freezing my tail off.

did he put the right one in his right pocket and the left on in his left pocket?  Or both in the same pocket?  Fornt or back pockets?  Did they hang out a little bit?

 

Because clearly only one of those is the right way to do it.
