Another " That Guy " story

Had a JV game tonight, it was a make-up game so I got the call last night and he was still looking for me a partner. Well, he found one.

 

He actually looked good as far as uniform so at first I was thinking good, this should be OK. Then we started doing our pre-game and I knew I was in  trouble. He would not work the "v", despite me insisting, so I just gave in there. I had all fly balls the entire game. :tantrum:

 

At the plate meeting he stands right beside me. I gave him a look but he didn't have a clue so I preceeded with the line-ups at which time he takes the meeting over, going over everything from hustle on and off the field to " If you want to discuss a call make sure you call time" ect. :jerkit:

 

In the 1st inning with nobody on the batter hit a ball in RC gap, a clear double. I see him making his pivot and also hear " Move, get out of the way, get out of his way." I was like WTF. He was yelling at F3 to get out of the runners way as he rounded the base. At least we didn't have to worry about obstruction.

 

Aside from the normal smittyish things the other thing he did I have never seen was that between innings once, he walked over and stood in the offensive teams huddle. That one cracked me up.

 

Anyway, I just wanted to share some of the joy I had today on the ball field.

Partners like that are why working a one man isn't the worst thing. For me having a sketchy partner is. I am sure you had an eye on him and a keen look out for the nearest bus the entire game.

There have been times where I have been offered a "partner" cargo shorts, under armour shirt, and blue jays cap type-of-partner.  I have always said, "no thanks."  I work those solo.

Just a reminder next time you pre-game with a partner and you are the plate ump--tell you partner straight out that "I do all the talking at the plate meeting"  that will get you off on a better start and if the plate meeting goes bad; only you to blame.

I think that's ridiculous...you'll come across as an ass to the 95% of partners who know better just so you can make it clear for the 5% who don't. And for them, they probably won't listen to you anyway.

If it is a partner that you do not know at all, then he says he has never worked the V, you better pregame everything, including keep your mouth shut in the plate meeting. If in your normal pregame he grunts in the right places, no, you don't mention the plate meeting, you have to assume he knows better. I have had partners, especially in other sports, if I have anything to add," Not a thing."

And for them, they probably won't listen to you anyway.why is it ridiculous ?? do you not pre game rotations, who cover what, rules, etc etc, do you come off as a ass for pre game these things??

^^^^yup, thats it.

 

If I'm not mistaken this was actually the way FED did things a few years back, have both umpires standing together for the plate meeting.  Didn't see the logic in it back then, or now for that fact.  Not sure if it was an actual mechanics thing that was in the FEDUM or maybe it was a state specific thing, but it's been gone for a few years.

 

Come to think of it I do remember seeing some guys in South Alabama that did it too.

I had to ponder just a bit too long so when I got it I had a hard hyena laugh.

maybe some day I'll learn, but I have no trouble shutting "that" guy right down at my plate meeting. No more than I would if he tried calling a strike for me.

If my base guy told me he doesn't call catch/no catch in the V... I don't know. Maybe I would laugh like a jackass and insist that he is pulling my chain.
