I had a pause when he brought his hands together. Then he started his pitching motion by dropping his hands. The pause was borderline and I look for this balk with pitchers that don't stretch and bring their hands together and kick their leg right away. Seeing a lot more of it lately.

You had a complete and discernible stop at the first look?

I can't see how that's not a balk given some of the other things they balk at that level.

I totally agree.

The other things we don't balk, they balk. The no stop is something at the pro level they let happen with many pitchers.

The philosophical question (and this really extends to many parts of OBR & pro, not just the balk) is whether the tradition of lax enforcement should trump a—without confirming or denying the balk violation since the UEFL Appeals Board is still discussing the play—potential violation of the rules.

Wonder why small ball doesn't work anymore?

From reading about the 80's, there was a major push to get, a complete and discernible stop with both feet on the ground, (not just a change of direction), enforced, or a balk would be called. There were so many balks called, because of all the pitchers who like to do this maneuver to freeze the runner, that they just called it off and went back to the old way. Umpires did their job, but they didn't like all the balks called. So the play for the big inning, large ball, guys like Billy Bean won, and the small ball guys lost. That's the way they want it, that's the way they get it. However, just like ball and strikes, each umpire may see things differently when it comes to a balk even if they are all on the same page with the definition or a balk, just like the definition of the strike zone.

read all about it.

Right you cant learn alot about balks from watching pro ball.

U1 had to take the heat on this one simply because of where he was. Meals was at third and should have gotten it. U1 can't even see his hands since he's a RHP.

I don't care if it's a balk or not if it gets Leland tossed. :)

You don't like Leyland? He seems to be better than most when it comes to respecting the umpires. He will protect his players, and get rather animated occasionally, but for the most part, he isn't awful... I've heard that a lot in the profession respect him because he will never ever brings up a past call in the next game. New game = New attitude.

Seems to always be the same attitude. He does protect his players, and that's fine, but he doesn't know when to quit. He seems to always stay just a little longer than he should and gets tossed.

But you got to admit, Ozzie has Leyland beat by a landslide.

Does he pick on the young guys like George Anderson use to rather than the veterans.

And Leyland gets the short stick again today with the botched dropped-3rd-strike-foul-ball mess :) He loves umpires right about now.

Ozzie is a bigger idiot, no doubt. With Leland he seems to go out at the right times most of the time but will either push what he says or stays too long. Go out, make your point, even forcefully, then go to the dugout.

While I agree ....

WHO DOES THAT THOUGH?
