I saw this mentioned in another string so I thought I'd post up in here since LASIK meets all the requirements of equipment; expensive, makes you look better calling a game, not completely necessary, and a real cool thing to get.

I've actually had my eyes done twice, first time 11 years ago and noticed over the last year that my night vision was getting a little wonkey. I started having trouble seeing the signs the catcher was giving from B and C at dusk and later. I had them re-done about 6 weeks ago, my vision is at 20/15 right now and it makes all the difference in the world on the field.

I had 20-20 vision but that doesn't work as an umpire so I visited a LASIK doctor to see if he could jack up my eyes so I could fit in with the rest of my peers. My resulted are amazing. I have had 5 ejections this season all balls and strikes. Thanks Dr. Lipchitz !!!!

That would be my post talking with Johnny about my getting LASIK this Memorial Weekend. Wife and I have been talking about it for a while and saw a Groupon for $2400 each for both eyes. We decided that we would never get a better price for it (since it is the wavefront LASIK as well as free updates if needed for life) and to do it. Turns out it is the official LASIK provider for the Vancouver Canucks NHL team. They are mainly based out of Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, WA and just opened an office down towards the Portland area.

I will mirror everyone else here. I had been a contact wearer since grade school. I use to hate playing and working games in the wind and would always wear sunglasses behind the plate to protect my eyes from drying out, or getting dust in them. Three years ago I got LASIK and it was some of the best money I ever spent.

I think it's time I pulled the trigger on LASIK myself. I've had horrible vision for years but it has been at least correctable. I think I'll be making an allocation to my flex spending account next year to get it done.

There sure are a lot of blind umpires here. :Cool2:

Before going for the lasik surgery, be sure to know that as you age, your vision will still change anyway. This will effect mostly your reading and close work, inability to see in the dim light, etc. So you may have to return for "tune-ups" as necessary or wearing reading glasses. So the great results may be temporary.

Now the question we all want to know. Can I write some of this off as an officiating expense?

That sounds....dicey. :) But if you have access to a flex-spending account, there's no need, you can get tax-advantaged status through that, plus get all the money up front and pay it off throughout the year.

Went in for a LASIK consultation today. Turns out my far distance is close to 20-20.

But my close up no so good.

I only need LASIK in my non dominant eye.

Has anyone done only 1 eye?

A co-worker of mine, a few weeks ago, had one eye optimized for distance, one eye for close. She said it took about 3 day to adjust, doesn't even notice it now.

I'm three month out from my enhancement, I'm between 20-10 and 20-15. I don't think ther is any way I could have mono vision one eye corrected far othe for near). You can always have the other eye done but you're back in the same schedule and taking up more time.
