All ...

I've searched and nothing 'specific' came up so here goes....

Hemming plate pants

Here is what I know:

- wear your shoes and leg-guards

- get in your stance to have them hemmed

- have your hem leave 4 to 6" of left over material underneath to give the leg weight

- have them hemmed at an angle (military hem?)

What am I missing? Anything?

Thanks!!

I've had leather sewn into the hem on each side along with a few extra inches underneath to provide weight.

I also get the invisible hem vs a standard hem.

Never, never, never cuff your plate pants.

They need to be short but not floods when your in your stance and long but not dragging on the ground when your standing up. Maybe someone can invent the expandable inseam just like the exandable waist band. lol.

I think this thread would beneficial if guys took pictures of their hems and posted them on here. I've had a heck of a time trying to explain to my local alterations place about how I need these pants to look.

While you're at the seamstress go ahead and get a permanent crease in the front and back. of each leg. Mine only charges $10 per pair to do this and it helps them look incredible. Note the polywools (U-A & the other guy) have a silicone bead in them giving them a similar look.

Great question, good ideas.

My wife retired from doing mine, and all the tailors in my area have English as a second language; good service, just not much baseball knowledge so I had the same quandry a few weeks ago.

Wore my pads w/plate shoes, and then my base shoes with base pants.

I brought a picture of an MLB crew standing at home plate and told the tailor to make them like the picture. Plate pants wokrd out great, base pants just a little long.

I have my base pants done just a touch longer than I'd have suit pants done ( I have suit pants done with a full break BTW) ...this way, ....when in the 'set' position, they're not "flooding out" on me ;)

Old Military trick - turn your pants inside out, run duct tape down the front and back pleat, reverse them again and iron the pleat. I also have my pockets sewed shut. That only works with pants with the straight front. No pleats. I also put 2 layers of duct tape at the bottom to stop them from wearing and add weight. I have also been known to starch my base hat with a mixture of Water - StaFlo startch and elmers glue. Mix staflo for extra extra stiff and water add a couple shots of elmers. spray it on, rub it in with fingers. add a little water if it is shiny or gets white. Buy Heal and sole dressing for your shoes, use as directed. Its sometimes hard to find. that stuff makes your soles look better than new. but be careful spill it on somethign including yourself and it aint coming out and do not put it on the leather or it will crack.

Just wonder how old is this military trick and which military?

Never heard of that one and thought I had heard them all before.

If I had ever caught anyone with duck tape on their uniform pants during an inspection they would be repeating it with a re-inspection on a Saturday morning.
