I had a 3 1/2 hr. marathon last night. It was a JV game played in a blustery wind. Neither team could catch a cold if they tried. I think the score was something like 25-18. There were at least 12 total pitching changes and none of them could buy a strike.

I didn't help because I was out of sorts all night and my zone was HORSESH*#! I knew and my poor partner knew. But I was consistent horseSH*# for both teams. Just a terrible, terrible game for me. I also got straitlined on a run-down because I got sucked into getting too close.

It was absolutely my worst game in at least three years. Maybe it has something to do with all of the terrible ball I'm seeing played. After the game, my partner said I great strike zone for a varsity game, if you catch his drift. I caught it and he was correct.

On JV games we have a time limit on weeknights of 2 hours unless it is a tie then we play it out.

On weekends there is no time limit unless there is a varsity game following the JV game.

Sometimes with bad games you lose focus and then everything goes to hell. Pick something to work on to keep yourself sharp.

I have struggled with keeping my game up during long and "boring" games. I asked for advice earlier on here in the Select Ball section, and there are plenty of pieces of advice similar to those by mstaylor in there to help you through those games. What I really need to work on is keeping a positive attitude. That is more important IMHO because this is the first step to losing focus.

It depends on the league. I have a league with no time limit, (see above game), a league that is two 5 inning games and one league that has a two hr. limit. I wish all jv were 5-innings across the board.

In the words of the immoral Bill Clinton, I feel your pain. I have had my share of those kind of days. Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you. I once had a 4-1/2 hour, 7 inning snoozefest varsity game many years ago. Everything that came close to the strike zone both teams would hit the bejesus out of the ball, nobody could field a ground ball, errors galore, and there was nothing either of us umpires could do to speed it up. I was already calling anything close that wasn't clobbered a strike, and my partner was fudging out calls on every close play at first, and we still couldn't get out of there. The game was just about ready to get called on darkness (I was pleading with God for some darkness at this point) when the game mercifully came to a conclusion. The final score was something akin to the score in your game.

Last night HT up 5-4 in TOP of 7 and I'm cruising to a sub-2hr. JV game. Final score 19-5 VT and 3+ hours. :banghead:

I was working an adult wooden bat game last summer and between innings a fan tells me, "Boy, you guys are getting this thing done!" Never tempt the baseball gods with that statement. I told him if he screwed it up I was coming after him in the parking lot. :hopmad:
