In a nutshell:

No runners - A

1 runner on 1B - B

Any combo of 1 or more runners with someone beyond 2B - C

Ball hit to the infield, stay on the outside, Ball hit to the outfield, come in.

Remember angle to the play is much more important than distance, so try to get a good angle on any play.

Pretty darn good "nutshell." The only difference we do is BU is in "C" on any combo with one or more runners when one of the runners is beyond 1B, i.e. R1-R3, R1-R2, R2 only or R3 only.

That's basically what I was trying to say, but goofed by saying "beyond 2B"

I guess a better way to say it would be (a smaller nutshell):

No runners = A

R1 only = B

Any other time with one or more runners on = C

Our association has two leagues that use two (that's right, 2) umpires for machine pitch and t-ball games ($30 per umpire, per game). Both have 2 machine fields and one t-ball field with games played at 6pm and 8pm on each field, each night M-F...all games are 1.5hr time limit. One of the leagues also plays three games on each field every Saturday.

We've had quite a few college students start out there and use their game fees to buy equipment before moving up to kid pitch levels.

Wow, that seems like a lot for machine pitch. Our assn. pays one umpire $20 a game for machine pitch (1:20 time limit), 2 umpires $30 each for 9U/10U (1:30 limit) and 2 umpires $35 each for 11U/12U (1:45 time limit).

Next year they are discussing only using 1 umpire for 9U at $45/game. Life on the bases is pretty boring 99% of the time in 9U B)

T-Ball??? Really??? :Horse:

I can answer that . By the umpires choice. This is the level with the highest precentage of younger GLM's.

I would gladly work a 1.5 hour game without a partner for $45! According to our contracts all LL minor and major games are 1:45 and they pay $35 per umpire (2), per game as long as two or more games are scheduled. If only one game is scheduled it goes up to $40 per umpire.

What I don't understand is why we only get $40/game for 1:50 Colt/Palomino league games, and we just found out this year it will stay at $40 for the no time limit 7- inning PONY/Colt/Palomino All-Star Tournament games. You would think they would pay more than the time limited games.

I don't get paid. :( and we work harder than the pay leagues around here.

Oh well. Worth it to umpire with people who like to learn during tournament season.

While I do not advocate all volunteer for LL, I think the amount you are getting paid for Minor and Major games is to much for LL.

We get $20 for Minors and $25 for Majors. Any umpire taking pay during the season is also required to work without pay for LL TOC and All-Star when we do 4 man crews.

As far as getting the same amount for tournament games for PONY. The level of play should be better so that time limits do not come into play.

Don't get jealous I have a machine pitch game tonight $40 bucks. $35 fee + $5 single game fee. Its stealing and I don't need to use a gun and can't be arrested. The games have an 1:30 drop dead but the longest one I've had has gone barely over an hour.

I imagine that, this early in the season, the Pitchers are ahead of the Hitters...

I don't do hardly any LL, but I think our umpires are fairly compensated. Most LL's around here do not use volunteers because they expect more from their umpires. One league, two years ago went in a different direction with another association for about $10 less per umpire/per game to save money. By the time their Fall season started up they had signed another contract with us adding $5 per umpire/per game to the rates. They realize that getting trained umpires in uniform that show up for every game scheduled is worth something.

I would never ask any of our umpires to do games for free. We are not a volunteer association and that's the way it is. We do a charity tournament once a year where the game fees are donated and we umpire the local Special Olympics Softball Tournament for free every year, but other than that our umpires expect to be paid for the work they do.

I know for a fact there is one league (I won't say what age group) that has over $70,000 in their main account that rarely, if ever dips below that because of the income from just the concession stand. I do not feel sorry for them because they have to pay for umpires.

As for the PONY tournaments, the first couple of rounds see quite a few 3hr games (I had 4hr+ game 3 years ago 36-13 in 5 innings, I still have nightmares about that one, every single player from the losing team pitched in that game...at least I was BU). This year they are at least discussing adding $5 for every 15 minute block over 2hrs. If you do get stuck with one of those 3hr games you will at least get paid $60 which I guess is something. but we get $90 for 3hr men's league games.
