Lord knows I hate umpire bashing at any level, but I really don't like how this play was handled. . .

It seems to me that Umpire Hernandez forgot that he and Posada were at first and not at home plate. Where is the call? And catcher transplant Jorge immediately understands the umpire's no call as a missed touch of first.

I would like to see a safe call in this situation to indicate that the runner beat the throw (having acquired the base by passing it). Anything more is up to the defense.

Hernandez messed it all up. He even called a phantom out. There was no 3 foot violation and he called the out prematurely. Hernandez screwed up the entire play.

Hey, who are you and what have you done with Mr. Umpire ?!?! :)

That's the most negative I've ever seen you in regards to a MLB guy ....I like it! :Cool2:

The worst part is those who believe in handling a force out at 1B this way will now have video of it. I've seen Hernandez get a lot correct when many think he missed it. But, he completely messed this one up. He gave credence to those who think this is correct. Now, he made it harder to debunk this notion by doing it at the MLB level.

There's also video of an NCAA umpire that admitted to making the wrong call simply to screw over a team. That doesn't make it right.

Question: Why was a tag necessary? When F3 and B-R both missed first base, it appears Posada steps on the bag before he makes an attempt to tag B-R. Isn't he out the moment Posada stepped on first??

As long as F3 made it clear he was appealing the missed base when he stepped on it, then yes, U1 should have granted the appeal. This is the real issue in the OP.

Chapter 9-Appeals

II. Appeal of a Runner's Failure to Touch or Retouch

Subsection C: Missed Base Appeals

2. A missed base appeal of first (overrun) or home occurs when [7.08k]

(a) action is relaxed and the allegedly missed base or the suspect runner is tagged [7.10d], or

(b ) action is unrelaxed and the suspect runner is tagged off base.

MLBUM 2010

34. Interpretation of Rule 7.01: Appeal Plays: Approved Rulings

(12) Batter-runner hits a ground ball and beats the play at first

base but misses the bag.

Ruling: The proper mechanic is for the umpire to call the runner

safe, indicating he beat the play. If the defense appeals by tagging

the runner (or base) and appealing that the runner missed first base

before the runner returns to first base, the batter-runner would be declared

out. Note also Official Baseball Rule 7.08(k) Comment.

It doesn't matter if he was calling the tag or the touch of the base, you still show safe then wait for the appeal. Years ago there was a debate on the touching of the base or tagging the runner on the appeal. One school of thought was if he was trying to get back you had to tag him. If he continued to go down the line or was making a relaxed return, you could touch the base. That issue was never really settled with anything official. It would be good to see that happen at some point to clear that up.
