In 2013 an MLB umpire balked a pitcher for stopping delivery when the batter raised a hand or said time, can't remember which. The rule in the book at that time only protected the pitcher if the batter stepped out although most of us used common sense and would not balk any action by the batter that caused the pitcher to stop. That MLB umpire was literally correct however. The next year MLB changed the wording from "stepped out" to "inadvertently caused". I think we could ascribe the "balk" to the batter's flinch. from 5.02(b)(2) Comment: "If after the pitcher starts his windup or comes to a “set position” with a runner on, he does not go through with his pitch because the batter has inadvertently caused the pitcher to interrupt his delivery, it shall not be called a balk. Both the pitcher and batter have violated a rule and the umpire shall call time and both the batter and pitcher start over from “scratch.”"

I think I saw it on an Arbiter video back when NCAA was on Arbiter. But a guy named David Uyl espoused it in a Referee article back in 2013. The glove needs the squeaky toy. But I do remember an NCAA video of a big dog telling to watch the ball into the glove and listen for the foot. So some might be doing it that way.

Just apply the rule which is designed to penalize this and any other deliberate attempt to break up a DP illegally.

The "legend" would imply this guy knows what he's doing. The play would imply that the umps do/did not know what he's been doing or thought it was because of stupidity and did not have the intel, assuming the announcers have seen this guy become a legend due to bending the baserunning rules.

Adult men's league. Not many had speed but the younger ones tried it just a few times.

I was filling in as PU for a local men's league I normally didn't call for. Steal is on and batter goes over the plate as F2 steps into opposite batter's box while gunning the runner. Drop my point. Next inning same F2 does the same thing with batter trying to interfere. I mention to batter that be would INT if R1 was safe. Batter says our umps don't know enough to call it. F2 gunned every steal attempt in that game. Turns out he was an ex pro Mexican League catcher.

Other than R3 exception, young and nimble use the pull side. Old/or not nimble or stiff necks use opposite the pull side. When inside always deep B. Just saw an MLB overturn of a play at 2B which ump using that outside position.

Wouldn't a travel game be the circle? But let's agree on the initial signal. I go with what MLB did after Eddings fiasco. Right arm out, I think I point but sometimes flat hand. Only had one rec coach ask me about it. Otherwise HS and upper they know what's happening. Yes, the verbal needs to be used for F2 and the batter if there is any doubt but most of the time even your signal is not needed. Does anyone still use a safe? Downside being that you signal no catch and then F2 picks up the ball and tags and you reverse to out.

I usually save the verbal for the completion of the throw. Haven’t had any issues doing that.

We don't know if the ump who stumbled thought he was bumped and backed off when he realized what happened or the coach is spinning it. How do you "vaguely hear" a warning. But the "shoo" did look bad.

Haven't rewatched video yet but my first impression is two partners coming in to cowboy coach as PU walks away. Coach does not stop and ump who fell backs up and trips over partner's foot. But that partner also had a hand on him to what seemed to be backing him away. Coach says in his presser that ump that fell got up and gave him 2 games for bumping.
