Can you have a foul ball without it being counted as a swing?
ArchAngel72 replied to ArchAngel72's question in Ask the Umpire
oK THANK YOU So no swing is required to cause a foul ball, or a ball in play. Sorry for all the confusion I was merely trying to help Angel out with the mind set that "Well he fouled it off so that is a swing" Cause I am just struggling with the fact a batter does not have to, and it is not considered to have swung if the pitcher strikes his bat with the ball. I mean yeah he did not actually swing, but then its like how did the ball become determined as fair or foul after that what action caused it.. "None" So being that its a non action why does the batter then get a strike counted against him? He did not offer... he was just crap unlucky the pitcher had the talent to hit his bat. Anyone else seeing this rabbit hole or am I the only one looking at this scratching my head. I mean if a pitcher throws behind a guy and you warn him, could not he say well I was throwing at his bat? -

I am confused... Did Madmax just verify I have a relevant concern... Is what I stated indeed true? I may feint... So is a foul off the end of a bat when a batter did not actually attempt to hit the ball considered a swing? -

This is the situation I am talking about. regardless of Angel calling it a swing. IS it a swing? Take his call out of this Just the situation of the ball being fouled off the knob without the batter swinging the bat. Is that considered a swing? Take the other situation batter ducks and it hits the bat behind their head and goes foul. Is that a swing? -

This is a very relevant question at this time because if its a swing it cannot be reviewed in MLB -

Pitcher throws the ball inside and the batter does not clear the knob of the bat. It hits the knob while the batter is trying to avoid being hit himself. Ball is declared foul. However my question is. Is that considered a swing? I have seen two rulings recently where the same umpire called it foul and then stated the batter swung the bat ( which I did not see a swing ) then the other situation the umpire asked U1 Did he go and U1 declared no swing. Anyway just asking is a foul off the bat via a pitch that the batter is defending himself called a swing? -
His timing on getting down for the pitch is awesome, However he did not seem to get all the way up before calling that strike. He needs to work on that for sure. 🤣

LL umpire training again
ArchAngel72 replied to ArchAngel72's topic in Umpire News From Around the Web
Cam is well versed and has been umpiring for like 10 years now? He just did a Regional 50-70 tourney for LL which I thought was incredible at his age. ** he is also NH D1 co-UIC -
LL umpire training again
ArchAngel72 replied to ArchAngel72's topic in Umpire News From Around the Web
Yeah a lot of those are younger kids coming out to see what its like and to get some info and try it out. But 99% of them have never done this before and while its all rudimentary training its also done within 3 hours so their was a lot covered and not near enough to say they are DONE training but yeah lots to go over with them all. I did have some fun with my group and tossed in lets see your called 3rd strike call. One kid was doing a windmill that looked like a early 80's guitar god. It was awesome but ill advised as he was tossing his head around with it too LOL. But yeah I just went back and looked I was too busy watching/listening to Cam to notice that F3 dropped the ball. LMAO I never watched the background till then -

NFHS Ejections and Subsequent Suspensions
ArchAngel72 replied to SeeingEyeDog's topic in High School
Dog, So let me get this straight. An Umpire had something happen they deemed bad enough to go straight to EJ This was then appealed latter by a school? and overturned due to structure which allows what happened to happen but then they deem themselves who most likely were not AT the game to say nah it was not that bad lets undercut the umpire and allow the coach back out there. So um, no one take another game with that coach. As umpires we should all stand together and let that school know we do not feel safe around that school or their coach. -
Unsportsmanlike conduct-slow pitch softball
ArchAngel72 replied to Judy Nesbitt's question in Ask the Umpire
Seems to me I would call time call the def coach out and ask him to deal with this, I am assuming the age group is low -
I am curious at what level are you going to be umpiring at? If I missed it sorry.

Heh..

in LL I call it Shenanigan's and call time and tell the fielder nope sorry runner was safe and you pushed them off. I aint playing with any of those Shenanigans here today so please do not do that again. "Safe" 😂

No wiz its giving them an age appropriate zone and getting the batters to actually swing at a pitch. A lot of these kids just came from hitting it off a tee or hitting a ball a coach threw. They need that bat off their shoulder Trust me at 8-10 U you still call more balls than strikes, unless you have a 10U at that level who is mature enough to be up with the 12U and their parents kept them back to give them a 10U all star year. It happens yes but it is no where near the norm. -

If the fences are not talking to you when their kids are up to bat then you are calling too small a strike zone. 8-10 I go top of shoulders to bottoms of the knees and all the way to the opposite batters box line ( which in LL is an extra ball width) 8-10 you want those kids swinging at everything that they can reach. No walk fests! 10 -12 I bring it back down to what LL tells me to call, top of knees to armpits over a part of the plate. Here I get complaints about my low strike calls that I see at the knee while its over the front edge of the plate. By the time it gets to the catcher he can be digging it out of the dirt at his crotch but what I saw when it crossed the plate was it hit the top of his knee.. Sorry thats in the strike zone even though your standing a foot behind the plate at the back of the box. Its not where you are standing its while its over the plate. let em chirp... strikes = outs = innings -
"sits here and chuckles in LL" It all starts at the 8-10 level with us pushing these kids to keep moving, and thankfully LL now allowing coaches to catch to warm up a pitcher. Ty to all the LL umpires who push kids to keep the games moving.

0.2 its above the rim nevermind coming out of his hand. The trailing guy had that 100% What happened to cause that to be reversed?

Maybe it was a dare/bet?

I would think from a safety stand point MLB would step in and be like um wear something that 1 looks more pro and 2 is safer... that mask looks SCARY. in more ways than 1 I say this cause I would not like to see a guy get injured due to equipment.. no disrespect meant to P.C. meant.

at 6:31 I am scratching my head. Was it because his hands came apart before he stepped off? He tosses the ball into the glove as his hands part and then he steps off... /shrug I am reading into this as I am FAR from the expert on these things.

at 5:33 I see what looks like a flinch/feint towards 2nd then a couple seconds later he picks his foot up to step off. Thats how I read it with out sound that is.
