  1. Certainly given the high variance in experience of my partners. That said, personally I don't fall into the camp that 'only the PU can initiate signals'. It's strongly preferred but if our rhythm is off or they get busy, I'll do it (or one of us on a >2 umpire crew). I do this for rotations on a full size field 3/4 man as I break off the muscle memory rust (only do those game in the playoffs). I give myself non standard signals that no one else can see.
  2. I fully agree with this. If someone did this type of stuff (getting all up in someone's face and spitting on them while yelling) in public, it would be considered assault. I have no idea why we condone this type of behavior just because it happens to an umpire on a baseball field.
  3. At this point, only reason for the signal I've got is remind the PU to be on their toes. Prodding along, not fighting... why don't we do the timing signal with 1 out and multiple runners on base?
  4. Assuming you mean umpire pregame and not the plate meeting... It's more a function of familiarity with the crew and the field. A crew of 4 that are trained the same and have worked together often, at a field they've been to frequently? Nothing special. Have to be there early for extra pomp & circumstance is all. A group I've never worked with minimally, some of whom were trained differently? We're talking through situations in more detail. Maybe not taking a simple nod or yes as enough. In both cases, a new field we've never been to before (especially a messy one)? We walk the field, talking through this that and the other aspects.
  5. "Seek first to understand" I thought Tomboy did a good job with this one. (the lede aside now that I see it)
  6. Once I grokked that when it's called is nearly insignificant, I stopped feeling any urgency. I may make it bigger or not nonchalant like a normal 3rd out to ensure PU sees it well, but I don't feel any urgency.
  7. Take a look at 8-4-2-k-1 The above is for @FourthOut (the quote of a quote gets twisted)
  8. This assumption is the one to investigate to understand where you went wrong.
  9. Do you accelerate your call when it's a possible score/no score time play?
  10. Sticking with LL that this game was played under, the above is not correct. The Interference is judged in regards to the fielder taking the throw, not the throw itself. LL 6.05(j) (emphasis mine): in running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, the batter- runner runs outside (to the right of) the runner’s lane, or inside(to the left of ) the foul line, and int he umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base; except that the batter-runner may run outside (to the right of) the runner’s lane, or inside (to the left of ) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball; Form the new umpire Manual (that supersedes the RIM): Key Rule Elements – Must Be Present for Interference: There are two essential conditions that must be met before interference under this rule can be called: o A throw must be made. If no throw is made, there can be no interference with a fielder taking the throw. o The throw must be a quality throw. ▪ A “quality throw” is one that, in the umpire’s judgment, could reasonably have been caught by the fielder covering first base had the runner not been in the way. ▪ A throw that sails well over the fielder’s head, is wide of the base, or clearly uncatchable should not result in an interference call. I'm unclear what you're describing (whether the actual play or your hypothetical). Who would potentially OBS? Are you referring to a fielder between home and first base? The fielder at first base fielding the throw? Or something else? The runner can go where they like (other than counterclockwise or to otherwise confuse the defense). And, if outside the RL (not in an attempt to avoid a fielder fielding a batted ball) they are subject to INT on a quality throw. If they interfere with a fielder fielding a batted ball they are subject to INT. If they are Impeded OBS can be ruled. Only one of those things can be happening in a given moment.
  11. Separately, crossing dimensions, the fielder without the ball in front of the base and not in the act of receiving a throw certainly spooked the runner into changing his plans... no?
  12. Let's assume (fine, project) a bit: not having replay, when I'm one of my parent volunteer umpires are too quick and call the out without seeing proper control as the ball rolls away we preach "no ego". Yes you called Out and yes you will look stupid to now call Safe - do it anyway. And sell the Safe as BIG as any call you've ever sold. OUT....SAFE! SAFE! SAFE!! SAFE!!! I wonder if knowing replay is there short circuits that. Call it once and hold to it. Let replay overturn it. That's the question that ran through my mind.
  13. Well you're never getting from HS to MLB with that attitude!
  14. Right call or not, I like the mechanics (with grace for not calling Time first, though no one else was on base so...). I can hear his word in my head same as if here were full mic'd. Announcers not having enough subject matter expertise to understand the reasons aside, they knew that runner was SAFE!. Communication achieved.
  15. Expound please. I think I know what you're getting at but hearing the articulation would be great.
  16. Interested if others think knowing there is Replay affected the call as a whole. h/t @MadMax Tag Secure Possession - U-E Direct - Blue Jays Brewers 2026.04.m4v
  17. Let me answer your question with a question: regardless of anything else, does the batter have to be ready at 8 seconds regardless of F1 being engaged with the pitchers plate?
  18. Trying to convince me or yourself? 😁
  19. How does this one differ from calls in the past that quickly faded into no calls? Or is it the same POE coming back? (Minimal video. That's all the was on the broadcast.) h/t @MadMax for discovery OBS As Blue Jays Clement 20260327.mov
  20. Malicious compliance at the level that limits # of conferences would get the coaches to stop teaching Time on that.
  21. But completely unnecessary! Absolutely. My partners know my boo-boo face when the catcher tricks me into giving time on that. "Yeah, you got me, you got me. Ain't happening again kid."
  22. Same as F2 asking for Time to give 1st & 3rd signs. Never hurts to ask!
  23. No apologies needed. I get the brand separation. Just letting you know my experience.
  24. See articles and video here https://www.mlb.com/news/carl-edwards-jr-s-delivery-ruled-illegal-by-mlb This just applies to free foot correct? Is lifting the pivot foot anything? Either exaggerated like Huston Street? Or minimal like Sherzer?
