Is there a time set that the batter has to be aware, e.g. MLB 8 seconds?

Subject: Aspiring 15yo Youth Umpire (Kansas) - Seeking Mentorship and Gear Support
Velho replied to alex jones's question in Ask the Umpire
Including 5 MiLB umpires (3 AAA, a AA, & a High A) I've personally met - and even trained one of them at a LL clinic. -
Would it matter? I thought same but them re-read the language.

My league has added 8U playoffs since I went through it with my son. Worse, the UIC I replaced this year let himself get roped into umpiring the Final (and an IF game!). Same for 8U and 10U softball (which both have coach pitch). Ugh. I feel very stuck. No more below that though as long as I'm on the Board.

Speaking just for younger/rec level, when a Manager comes towards me after a call my partner made I make eye contact and give a small point (literally, I point) them to my partner. They almost always know they should not be coming to the other umpire. I also am proud of how the youth I’ve worked with will stand their ground when appropriate. Managers who think they can bully kids into deferring to an umpire that was 100ft away on a banger are ridiculous.

Thank you. I was word searching and then scanning. If it had been a snake it'd a bit me as Mama Cornette always said. rant (I hate NFHS font. At least in the 2023 pdf I have) /rant

Does NFHS not have the unintentional interference when in contact with the base protection? I can't find anything. OBR Rule 6.01(a) Penalty for Interference Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not. If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional

Arguably not applicable to R1 without R2 situation since BR shouldn't be double played on but from MLBUM Interp 30 (emphasis mine): "When an infielder deliberately drops a fair ball or a line drive to set up a double play situation, runners may safely return to the bases they occupied at the time of the pitch. The same application shall be made if an outfielder has come so close to the infield to set up a double play situation if he intentionally drops the ball."

Nice. And another one who takes helmet & mask off as one. As @tpatience said, if I had that flow I'd do it too.

This is LL. In February they publicly announce all Regionals (held in July) and WS (held in August).

Officially starting my high school umpire journey tonight
Velho replied to orangebird's topic in High School
I've become hesitant to call the one off the batter foot rom base because there have been too many that I've been about to call but it was just spin. -
The book clearly limits the intentional drop provision to an infielder: 5-1-1-j an infielder intentionally drops a fair fly, fair line drive or fair bunt in flight with at least first base occupied Other codes are the same. I can't find any interps or guidance that expands it to "could have been fielded by an infielder" like IFF does (in the reverse) though, Eeen if there were, getting around that explicit "infielder" statement is a killer and an interesting Protest would be forthcoming. Edit: BR didn't run to 1B, did they?

yep, goat rope mechanics and why, for our folks that have gotten post season assignments, we work 4 umpire games (what they will be doing) as much as possible throughout the year.

Until he entered the dugout or DBT, right? How long would that time period be (he has to go DBT eventually)?

Are baseball batting gloves part of the uniform or equipment?
Velho replied to Steve Jones's question in Ask the Umpire
That's consistent with MLB on the laces - can only hurt the wearer, not help them. -

Yes, thank you! That's what I was really looking for but couldn't remember where I saw it. -

Even when they break, can you be 100% to the point your EJing? (reminds me I want to ask this PU about this)

Adjacent observation: As new UIC I encountered that lower level (8U, 7U) are regularly having 7-8 players show up with a roster of 11-12, apparently because the kids are over scheduled with other sports, band, music, etc. When I update the level Guidelines I didn't even contemplate that since 15 years ago when my son played that never happened. Not once. I started asking at my various games when lineups are short and it seems to be endemic all the may up to Majors/12U.

Why do you think I use my government name on a very limited basis online - even though it had nothing to do with my day job? Let's just say California (and the west coast in general) is a very interesting place to live. (Not to mention the ways of my primary baseball Association.)

The world view that comment lives within aside, softball is quick. The chanting can be a bit... screechy at times but otherwise it's a more fun environment (nice music, dancing, etc). Game last night I saw more smiles, laughs, and genuine "hello" and "thank you"s than years (cumulative) from baseball. The catchers even apologize for missing a pitch - and they mean it!
