I've always just talk to the catcher and let him know that him coming up is preventing me from being able to see the pitch. stay down as long as possible. you cant call what you cant see. Especially the higher level you go, the more strict you can get on it. typically the older they get, they learn, or they have a coach teach them. I'd let the coach know as well that I cant see when your catcher is standing up.

You know, my biggest fear is one of these kids in 12u and up swinging aluminum bats lets go and comes back and gets me in the mask. I have had them hit me in the shin, forearm, and the catchers (typically same place as I do). I've only seen one time where an aluminum bat has shattered into 2 pieces, and thank God no one was hit, that went halfway to the mound. I don't even want to think of doing wood bat tourneys.

​Tell the coaches/assigner to pay/charge an extra $40-60 or whatever the pay is, and put another umpire down there. I found the same as others, if you track the ball all the way, you can typically get a good idea of what it is. JP

Hey guys, whats the biggest difference between WVP and WVG? I have a soft shell diamond iX3 and I am thinking about joining the HS chapter after my nephew graduates next year and I've already taken a foul ball to the rib with the soft shell, left me a nice little mark. Any recommendations? I am only 5'7"

​I was reading through other post and read that someone said that its the PU call. I was just pointing out in the video I saw an umpire at 2nd (indicating to me that they are running 3-man or 4-man) meaning that the BU in 'B' or 'C' has the slide at 2nd and not the PU. Either way, we are just sharing mechanics with different situations.

I have called interference on guys running to second throwing their hands up while the second base touches second and turns to throw it to first. I agree with it being hindrance, say had the catcher missed the ball or dropped after he threw his hands up. I've had a partner call runners interference on a ground ball to shortstop where he stutter stepped and took off right before the ball got to him and he ruled he hinder the fielder's ability to cleanly field it. What about hindering the fielder's ability to field a throw ball? Wouldn't it still be the same?

I believe its always good to come out, also the batter can give you a good impression by body language if he is 'thinking' of doing something about it..

I wouldn't consider that a lot. I think Pineda or whatever the Yankees pitcher name had more than what smith did. Either way, still illegal. How do you hit a batter with that advantage as well? Trying to act like you didn't use it?

I've seen players in high school games be on crutches and coach first base.. I have seen players with cast or boots on their feet that also coached first base... I don't see the problem with it, as long as his crutches, cast, etc. don't interfere with play and that he understands the risk he is taking. Even with rec ball and travel ball I'd do the same thing. granted most of the time, the coaches/players stay in the dugout if they have something like that, but why should a coach not be allowed especially if he is the only coach?

I love the announcer talking about a 45 degree imaginary line. I would love to see where that is in the rule book. I balked a kid 3 times last year for doing the same stunt.

We were playing under FED rules for tournament, but I ruled under OBR. Haven't really studied FED rules to know what the correct ruling was so I went with OBR. Btw, forgot to mention, the catcher did throw the ball but it went barely past the pitchers mound and the catcher went to the ground.

Runner on 1st, 1 out. Runner steals on the pitch, batter swings and misses, bat comes all the way around and hits the back of the catcher as the catcher is starting to throw to 2nd. As soon as it happens, I call time, signal towards home plate and announce that I have backswing interference and sent the runner back to first. Coach comes out and says in his 20 years of baseball, he has never ever, seen that called. He claims he doesn't even believe that there is such a thing. Walks back to coaching box. My partner said after the inning he heard the coach go outside the dugout, call someone, no idea who, and explained everything that happened and what I said.... hung up the phone and came back to the field, didn't say another word, pretended that nothing ever happened.

I had varsity fall game last year, bases loaded, no outs, I had the plate, and my partner was in "his" 'C'... well sort of. he was probably on the right hip of the pitcher maybe 1 foot away from the dirt.. anyways, ball hit hits off of him goes directly to the shortstop and they turned a double play. as soon as it hit my partner, I come out calling "time" umpire's interference, everyone advances one base, no outs recorded. Defensive Coach comes to me and says that he doesn't believe that's the right call because had my partner not been there they still would of turned a double play. I explained to him that it doesn't matter once it hit my partner, it was done. He didn't think it was right, went on his way. called the Varsity coach, asked him. after the game, the varsity coach was coming inside while we were going out to change and asked me about it. explained it to him, didn't completely agree, but didn't really disagree either. he said his team was called for verbal interference last year, which he didn't know was a rule either.

I am curious to while R2 was in a pickle, why didn't R3 run home? if they focused on to R2, unless he was tagged within the time it would take for him to slide and get back up.

So today me and my partner had a good one. Top of the 2nd inning. VT up to bat. #2 Hitter, First pitch, he pops up between home and 3rd. He runs to the first, ball bounces from fair to foul territory. (Foul Ball) Second pitch, is taking for strike 2. VTHC calls time, ask my partner behind the plate why we called the #2 out. We look at him confused and noticed that #2 went to the dugout after he fouled the ball, and #3 took his place in the box. (Note: Offensive Team is the one that caught the improper batter. We brought back #2 and left him with a 0-2 count. Next pitch, he hits a homerun. The next game, a coach for the same VT, came up and told us we got it wrong and that by NFHS, once #3 took a pitch, #2 is automatically out. My question is in NFHS, is he automatically out once a pitch is throw to the incorrect batter, or is like OBR, and correct batters come to the plate with the count?

Thank you all for your response. I was just curious, I am not in the high school chapter (yet) and I've never seen it happen before, so I thought I would ask.

I've always been taught and/or talked with others and have come to the conclusion that if you call it foul, its foul no matter what. you cant change foul to fair. but, if you call it fair and are a 100% sure that you blew it, then kill it immediately and eat it. Coaches will argue it either way, I just let them have there say to a point, then end it there. It happens, were not perfect but, we should always try to make the right calls. Sometimes we make mistakes just like coaches send runners when they shouldn't, etc.

The other night in my nephew's high school game, the offensive coach called time to talk to the batter. The Defensive coach asked the HPU if he has a free visit, HPU said yes and coach went to talk to the pitcher and the defense without being charged. Is that really possible in high school?
