  1. I had one instance when my son took my cup because he couldnt find his, and I had to do the plate without one. Got very lucky.
  2. sorry the warning part and "get a fence" was meant to be humorous, normally I would have asked if the pitcher took his signs from the rubber but that was getting old. I would agree that you dont change anything field to field, just wanted some thoughts on that type of fence; they have no structure at the bottom and with the mechanic of "go out on trouble balls" im just thinking that ( and I believe someone mentioned it earlier) you would assume a different type of trouble with that fence.
  3. Jocko, Ump24 (even though your from Canada) Would it be smart to assume ( i know already) that with that type of fence, you would think anything that can remotely go near the bottom would be trouble? If a ball is hit with enough speed to get anywhere near the bottom would it not be a good idea to get out there? especially in this case in which he said its a small field? Not pointing out either of you are wrong, just looking for expertise here. my thought is "man if it looks like it can go under im getting out there to avoid a mess." Also: F( was on his hands and knees reaching through the fence to grab the ball. At this point, I think to myself, "Well, no need to go check it now. Home run." Balls dead at this point, how can touching a dead ball cause a base award? if he touched it and caused it to go out, it changes from TOP to TOT base award.
  4. Stick ball manual Brooklyn addition circa 1957.
  5. Plate meeting: OK we have a temp fence in the outfield. Any ball that goes under, have your outfielders raise there hands and we will come out and check. Any ball under the fence will be a 2 base award, by rule. If your outfielder reaches under and continues play and we cannot verify that it did go under, we will not hear any arguement afterwards, consider that your warning, if you do argue you will be immediatly ejected, if you dont like it, get a real fence.
  6. I'd be looking for written ground rules about that fence prior to the game, and then ensured they were discussed in detail at the plate meeting and hear the coaches say they affirm. Or not show up cause I would have said to myself "sh*^ storm, don't accept gig"
  7. Why would he trail the runner to first on a line drive?
  8. So if you have no one on, ball hit to F4 who over throws F3 and the ball goes under the fence out of play but the F4 reaches for it the runner can take all the bases he can? I'm missing something. Did you discuss mechanics with your partner before the game?
  9. I dont even know what to say about this one. other than, it shouldd never happen, it's completely controllable.
  10. Did the pitcher take the signs from the rubber?
  11. Nice job. One of you is wearing the wrong pants, I know which one but I'm not saying. Match the tops!!!!
  12. You said non-Fed. How many outs? Ball to F-6? inside or outside of him, double play ball or slow roller? I'm getting to working area Fast. I got one eye on R2 and the other on F-6. I see where the play takes me depending on the action of the defense and the BU - above Fed I will prob stay, under Fed you never know where the ball goes. If I never ever worked with my partner, and he showed up 3 minutes before the game. I hopefully will have made the neccesary determination that he is mostly likely going to do the right thing or not. I will also signal him prior to the 1st pitch as to my intentions.
  13. If I was PU and the BU was in B or C (additional base runner) I most likely wouldnt be able to make the call at first, i have my own responsibilities.
  14. I am not making this up - I just got paid for a Varsity game I did 2 years ago. The school is a disaster. I called once a week - starting about 2 weeks after the game. Then monthly. I kept copies of everything. Finally - I sent a package of everything I sent to the school to the district superintendant telling him that I was going to go to small claims court and ask for my money plus interest. I also told my assignor not to put me at any of their games this year. I tossed 3 kids and the coach in the 4th inning, ending the game. Im figuring the coach thought that he was being smart by losing my contract. Before you ask: time is called - both 2nd and short come to the mound for a meeting. I see the shortstop take out a can of what appears to be dip from his back pocket and share with the other 2. I dip Copenhagen, never on the field, not till Im on my way home. I ask to see the can. I get "see it's just jerky" I say open it, I knew I had him when I asked, his face gave it away. He opened it and bam I tossed them all. Pitcher already had a warning for cursing (F-word). They would have been mercied anyway. I just put them out of their misery. In my report the coach told me " I (me) had no idea about kids and that I was a F'n Jerk-off" he even admited its was tobacoo and that they have been fooling him for the past 2 years with it. He didnt coach last year, I'm wondering if this is why.
  15. We should have write in answers. I would chose E. E. The person who wrote this test is an idiot. It would be D. For E you would have to call time to check to see if a medical emergency existed first right?
  16. Here are my recommendations: all umpires should pass a test and mechanics course (yearly) Don't build an "Old Boy" network. Help the people out who are out of work. Send only the best to tourney's - make them earn it. Do evaluations - prove that the harder you work the more "visible" you will be. Give awards. Develop a mentorship program.
  17. I think it depends on if the pitcher takes the signs from the rubber, and only on a Tuesday.
  18. make em take an umpires course and then have them do games. Then let all the umpires yell and scream at them from 100 yards away about the crappy strike zone and calls at the bases.
  19. What rule set?
  20. Tread climber 3X a week, weighted lunges 3X a week, light weightlifting, I walk at least 1 miler per day. Lunges are the best for behind the plate. I will also do sprints 5-10 yards while coaching my sons soccer team. i stretch every day, thats makes a big difference.
  21. the I.I.Q (idiot in question) is obviously from the New York area, I can recognize the accent. Being from the area i recognize the base ump as a HS Varsity Official, numbers and patch. The plate ump is horrible, I can surmise his lazyness by this video. I wouldnt walk toward the coach/dugout at all, I make them walk to me, unless Im quieting them down in the dugout. getting into an arguement with a coach who obviously doesnt know the rules is fun and should be made so. This is why I wont do youth ball. Players should be on the field and parents and coaches should be offiste in a building watching on a monitor.
  22. Yeh, but did he take the signs from the rubber? Sorry had to stick this in.
  23. 1. Major league - I'm an Indians fan. Best farm team in major league history. 2. Eight Men out. 3. The Natural 4. Bad news bears. 5. For love of the game - Cause the book was good, Jersey born author who also wrote the Pulitzer prize winning Novel "The Killer Angels" from which the Movie Gettysburg was based.
  24. When anyone asks for my name its "nunya" Nunya Bidness
  25. Bucket coach - 70's ump, batter almost out of the box, kid doing some damage to the jewels in the background. Bucket coach - no excuse look at the openings in the dugout.
