What was the question?

Batter fouls off a borderline pitch, asks you, "Was that a strike?"
bam replied to JHSump's topic in Free For All
There's no such thing as "borderline". "Borderline" is a strike in any level I officiate. So the answer would always be "yes". I had one a couple days ago foul off a pitch that was very high - chin high. Batter asks me if it "was it high?" "It was so high it would have been two balls". All three of us chuckled. See? I can be personable. -
Didn't we have an extended thread here last year where Semper_Fi had a runner retreat back to 2d ona 3rd world play?if I recall, the consensus was to declare the runner retreating to 2d out. I'm WAY too lazy to find the thread, but I believe it was more or less the same set of circumstances.

Good luck with that. You're suggesting you go from C to B back to C on, for example, a groundball to F5 who throws to F3, who then throws back to F5 with R2 going to third? On the groundball you get to a good working position for the play at first, but all you can do is pivot to get the play at third. I had that play last year. Fortunately, R2 being out at third for the third out allowed me to trot out to deep right while the 3rd base coach was screaming "How can you see THAT????"
-
The claim is that the play is going to come to first rather than any other base, and B is the best place to get that. I can almost agree if F1 is in the windup, but I feel more comfortable in C.

I know we're always taught angle over distance, but maybe you're a little too close. Try to back up another 5-10 feet and see how that works. And are you having trouble from both A and B/C?

I would have "missed" the first balk and tried to get the coach to go out to talk to the kid. 12U? C'mon. What kind of advantage is he gaining? Now if he keeps doing it, I guess you've got no choice. That's why I don't do that level anymore.

Some guys in my chapter set up in B with 2 outs, but lecture the rest of us that they're good enough to do that and wouldn't recommend it for others.
-
It would have been helpful if someone gave you the FPSR ruling - both R1 and batter are ruled out.
-
You may not believe this (although if you knew me, you would) but I just searched the WHOLE EFFING MLB network for the Mets/Braves game.
-
In FED this is easy - you wind up with R2 R3 since OBS ALWAYS requires a base advance and moves runners forced to advance. In OBR, the rule allows the umpires to "nullify" the act of OBS. It's type B so you let the action play out. You could make a case for calling either BR or R1 out, since R1 prevented BR from legally occupying 2d base. If it were me, I'm calling R1 out and awarding BR 2d. Then I'm getting ready to throw someone out.

Funneee.. Today I had that play. Batter lunges fr low outside pitch with R1 running. F2 collides with batter directly in fornt of the plate. I yell "THAT'S OB... INT... OB..." By the time I look up R2 is safe at 2d. "TIME. YOU (batter) OUT. YOU (runner at 2d) BACK TO FIRST." Christ! Spit it out, ya stammering bastard....

Let your partner ask. Don't bring it to him, as it will make the entire stadium wonder wtf is going on. It's his call.

I used to call at the LL field where I grew up, but the LL turned into such a sh&tshow, I quit.

I've followed this thread on and off. Can someone explain to a yankee what the heck USSSA and TD's are? How does it work?
-
Yeah. High-tail it out of Dodge immediately.

Yeah. High-tail it out of Dodge immediately. Why are you hanging around shaking hands?

Another name for that is "inconsistency." Or: "Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative" I could go on....
-
Another name for that is "inconsistency." Of course, someone once said "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" Make of that what you will.

This is funny - This exact play happened to me yesterday. I was BU. R1 R2. Pitch WAY inside clips batters shirt on the shoulder. I heard it very clearly, but the double steal is on. F2 makes late throw to F5. So now we've got R2 R3. I see batter talking to Plate. He comes to me - HBP? I nod yes. No one said boo, but I really think I should've pled ignorance. Edited to add: I was slighted peeved at my partner for even asking.

That's a good term ...thanks, MrUmp .... I just didn't want this to go off track from the original posters intention Yeah, because we've never had that happen before....
-
Admitting to it is worse than simply acknowledging and moving on.
-
Is that better than our rules interpreter who gets 50% of his calls right and 25% of his interpretations?
-
Eyesight? Who needs it? Game Management is what it's all about. Or at least that's what some in my chapter believe.
