Yes and no...I've seen players do both...they panic when they see runners running so they grab the ball. For sure...replay helps in gray-area cases. In this case, the umpire killed the play and it was confirmed via review....but yes..w/o replay...there is a risk in playing the lodged ball under the premise that you must trust the umpires to correctly know & apply the proper rule. When in doubt, get away from it...if there's no doubt, even w/o replay...a lodge is a lodge regardless of what the defense does or doesn't do.

I think we should get this in NFHS. There's case play support.

That's what happened in the 2nd video I posted. They watched the fielder "camp" but the camp was no where near the ball. I do think that ball was ordinary effort by an MLB infielder though

I was intrigued so I started looking. Here's one from July 2025 where the umpires did rule ordinary effort by an infielder.

I don't like it, but ultimately it is a rule to protect the offense. I think that an MLB player could have handled that batted ball with ordinary effort.

The most likely thing is that they screwed up. Yeah...it was a crew signal all right...it was the signal of "Time" And it's okay...it's not a bashing post..just an honest one. We all make mistakes, even in MLB.

My guesses are that Hunter is going to retire. Unfortunately he hasn't been on the field since he got hit in the head by a batted ball. I think that is a big part..then the other part is that MLB is moving everything in house. It's sad, because many umpires attended the school to get better at the amateur level. They had no desire to work pro ball. Those gates are closed now. That's the really sad part for me at least.
