I don't follow the contrast you're making. Hitting a catcher in the head with a bat could give him a concussion. True, but hitting him with a bat in the ear could hurt like the devil.

I know my humor is sometimes disguised (sometimes its funnier that way...sometimes not). All that said, I don't care how much we disagree, I do care about the tone of the disagreement.Argue the subject, not personality. If the person is arguing rediculously, report it to me or another Mod, we handle that. Consider us the game management.

When I am asked about FED catchers helmets, I tell them double ear, NOCSAE approved and if two piece, tested together. It is simple and kills the skull caps. As far as Jax's Fed with exceptions, if the tournaments has a list of exceptions then we are absolved of liability. I have seen tournaments allow the bucket outside, skull caps and OBR pitching rules. That is perfectly fine, and I am a stickler for safety rules. I really hate to allow a coach on a bucket so I tell them if a ball comes near them, they better clear and take their bucket ot they will not like my enforcement.

That's a good point, sometimes you are out in the cold on your own. To be honest, it shouldn't happen, it doesn't in my area. If they use a remote field, then that field gets it's own site manager. He handles the teams,scores, fans and doing the field. We use two umpires on everything, and generally have an umpire supervisor at all sites. If you are in a remote area, or a site manager that isn't readily accessible, certainly carry a cell phone, just keep it in your pocket. That way you have it if you have a crowd situation,a rules problem, or an injury.

We all have roles to play in officiating a game. Umpires administrate the game, which includes rules and game participants. That means generally the confines of the field, but can extend to pressbox. The coaches administer their teams and other coaches. Game administrators handle what happens outside the fence. The three entities interact but rarely do responsibilities overlap. That means you handle inside the fence, leave the outside alone. If fans get to a point where they disrupting the game, put the kids in the dugout until the admin handles the problem. I have seen umpires go outside the fence, both successfully and unsuccessfully. I personally have filled all three roles so I have a better insight than someone who has only umpired.

Every manual I have ever seen says B, and it makes sense. Your Evans grad was wrong. As far as being in B on a batted ball, it makes no difference on an outfield ball, it is absolutely correct on an infield hit. I don't want to lock this, please keep it civil.

I think the hovering method is to set yourself but also gives you clue if the catcher bakes off to chase a ball. I don't agree with it but some do do it.

Agreed, and yes, there are pros that do it, never touch the catcher. I know my son hated it and would tell an umpire quick to back off.

Agreed, the two need to coexist not bang heads. I have worked chain gang and had to fight for my position. There is only one place each guy can stand at any given point. Nobody is supposed to be within five yards of the sideline. I almost got in a fight one night. After the fourth or fifth time I had to ask the same asst to move,I simply stepped in front of him and moved him. You would have thought I killed his first born.
