I would have to go back and watch the video again. But I would agree that BI and obstruction is not major called enough in Fed. Because it wasn't being called hardly at all, they changed three rules to make it almost impossible not to call, yet guys still aren't calling it. Most Navy bases have or had a very active fast pitch softball program. Or maybe we just like boss people around. Air Force have been known to have FP SB around the base.

No IT needed, they have MLB guys in the truck and a headset between the truck and PU. It is a horrible test because it doesn't test the whole linking system between the field and NY, and the time it is going to take. The announcers said the umpires were three for three on correct calls. Personally I prefer to think of it as IR was 0-3 on overturns.

I actually boxed for ten years and never wore a cup. It wasn't until I started HS ball that I decided the law of averages were bound to get me. Still haven't gotten hit but I do wear a cup now.

I don't disagree with Manny, it is hard to tell nonstarters not to play hard. There are things you can do to try and keep things in check. Maybe make it more of a passing game, even by clearing quickly, once you get it over the half, slow it down and work on passing around the floor before you shoot. Soften you man defense slightly. You still need to condition them to beat tougher teams but not pound lesser ones. Hard balance.

There's a 60' mechanic called "The Pinch" that puts the base umpire in a position to see runners leaving early, but also puts them in a better position to get into the working area. However, it's not something I would recommend for a new umpire. steve ive never heard that term before....can you elaborate? With runners on, there are 3 positions for the BU: R1 only: BU sets up on the 3B side of the 2B cutout, so R1 can be seen leaving early. When ball is hit, step up into the working area and then work normal 90' mechanics. R3 only: BU sets up on the 1B side of the 2B cutout, so R3 can be seen leaving early. When ball is hit, step up into the working area and then work normal 90' mechanics. Anytime there is R2: BU sets up about halfway between F4 and the 2B bag. This is the one that can get you in trouble because when the ball is hit, you have to be able to stay out of the way of F4 and F6 while getting into position in the working area when the ball is hit. this is wrong.... R1 BU is in "B" or on the 2nd base side. R1 & R3 BU is in "B" or 2nd base side R2 or r3 or R1, R2, or bases loaded, or R3 BU is in "C" or the 3rd base side. Couple of questions. With R3, does 2 outs change C to B in PBUC? It was mentioned here a while ago. The last college clinic I went to did not want you in B at all due to an increasing number of picks at third. When you say B or C or deep B or C why do you have to refer to the side of the mound? Doesnt everyone posting here know the ABC positions? Does PBUC not like to use those terms? BTW, CCA does use the ABC terms but their written B and C positions use half the distance between the pitchers rubber and 1B or 3B as opposed to a tangent to the mound. Obviously a typo. I am a firm believer in ethics, that to means that if you take an assignment you keep it unless you talk to your assigner, with enough time, and explain you have a better assignment, closer assignment, whatever, and ask if he can cover you. If he can't, keep it. In the OP it is a case of Jax's normal assigner asking him to downgrade. I can't imagine him being upset that if you tell him you are already booked and don't feel comfortable kicking the other assigner to the curb. As an assigner I certainly wouldn't want that done to me so I would not ask someone to do it to someone else. I do know assigners that believe you should work for them exclusively, or at least primarily. They believe even if you close out a date, if he calls you go. I believe that is a horrible thing to ask so I don't work for him. I could get good games and make a ton more money if I would. I think if he has no ethics when it comes to assignments then how likely he will have any when it comes time to pay. I happen to know that is also a problem.

If you are doing anything with the school, either be in uniform or dress pants and polo shirt. Stay away from instructors if you see them outside of school, including the hotel bar. If you aren't looking for a job, then staying away is irrelevant. DO NOT, DO NOT be late to class. Be ready to study and study hard. That means both books and physically. Be in shape when you get there, it's not boot camp but it isn't far from it.It is physically cruelling, long days. I know a lot of the instructors and they know their stuff. Don't play Stump the Ump, argue with what they tell you to do, or make excuses on why you messed something up. Trust me, you will screw up, it is their job to teach you but also to make you screw up, it is part of the process. There is a thing called drill syndrome. They will be doing something and all of a sudden they will do something different. It is to show you how important what you are doing is but it is not the only thing you have to watch. Take nothing personally, they aren't there to be friends or stroke your ego. Their job is to produce well trained robots. They don't care if you have never called a pitch or have been doing it for ten years, they want it done their way, period.

I meant to mention it but Manny makes a point, stepping on the plate is not in itself illegal, even if you contact the ball. What is illegal is stepping completely out of the box and contacting the ball. So if any part of his foot is touching the batter's box, even if the rest is on the plate. The other possibility is your umpires may have high school experience. In HS, stepping on the plate at all and contacting the ball is an out. For some reason they don't allow that his foot may be on the line.

Welcome to the board. I see you are the UIC but do you umpire at all or are you a coach, board member and umpire scheduler. Either way works, just curious.

If both stories are as you say then they certainly got them both wrong. You are correct that he has to touch the ball to be out for stepping out of the box. As noted above they could have gotten him for batter's interference if the catcher had attempted or thrown at a runner. If you aren't going to protest then all you can do is ask for the ruling and try to convince them of their error. Sounds like they aren't open to that but try you must. It sounds like you are playing travel ball, and unfortunately quite often you get less than spectacular umpires working that level. Mistakes will happen but more likely due to lack of training or rules knowledge than because of homer umpiring. Keep asking questions, at your level, even if you agree with the call, odd things will happen. If nothing else it will increase your knowledge and help you to debate the umpire.

Talk to the local LLs, Pony, whatever is in your area. You will find some guys, some good, some bad, some trainable.

Rule 8.00 does not address how to get on the rubber for a wind-up, it addresses how to pitch and how to get off. It says where the feet can be and that you can step to a base, absolutely nothing on how to get on. This a perfect time to protest, it will make him get in the rulebook to confirm his incorrect call.

For anybody working any combination of Fed, NCAA and OBR, the BRD is a indispensable source. I highly recommend it, money well spent.
