Who is they? Do they have a small little mustache under their nose (the kind made famous by a certain individual who resided in Germany back in the 1930's)? Do they care if you can get your calls right or just that your mask is black? I mean who the hell should care if your mask is black or a charcoal gray??? It'd be one thing if your mask was pink...of course, they'd probably like that.................. I don't disagree but unfortunately assoc or college staffs are that invasive. I completely get using conference approved clinics, approved uniforms but spec colors on gear is too much.

I switched for much the same reason. Actually I changed originally because I felt more comfortable with LH batters but the ease on my knees was a nice bonus.

Agreed Rich, the serve has a good reminder but technically not necessary. The IFF wipe is just another that can save a brain cramp but not 100% needed.

I always pointed right, watched a guy that I really respected, he pointed left on LH batters. A side note, he was also a scissor guy, so I figured that was a scissor thing. I did it the next game with our assoc president, he said it looked like hell and never do it again. Ended that experiment, pointed right ever since.

I actually had a coach ask me that in a tournament this summer. I was not sure what my response should. My first thought was are you kidding me? But I thought that was not a good response. I told him it was not a topic open to discussion. He left the plate meeting and the other coach asked me, WTH is he thinking. I just grinned.

Yes, the blown call on the perfect game was a bad miss but it was one play in a career of great calls. What is never mentioned is shortly after that play Joyce was voted the best umpire in the league by the players. What drives me crazy is every article about him has to include his miss in the perfect game.

As Rich so concisely pointed out, this is not umpire interference, nothing to do different than what he did. It was a busted play by the defense and Drake wanted a good look at it. Catcher screwed up, got there late and turned the wrong way. Next play.

I would be pissed if a senior partner did that to me in the middle of a game. However, if you call something and your senior partner insists on going with something else, do exactly what Stan said do. Look it up, or come here and doublecheck, but prove to yourself you are correct and have rule support. Then go to your senior partner and ask him to help clear your confusion. Simply tell him you are confused, this is what I was remembering, can you explain what I am reading incorrectly? There are times we think we know or understand something, talk to a senior guy and find out we were incorrect. Here, you are correct and hopefully you can get your boss to see the light.

In two man, if both umpires see it then generally the PU does the award. If he is watching elsewhere and doesn't see it then certainly get together.

@Iowa Ump 7.06 When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal “Obstruction.†(a) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction.The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall advance without liability to be put out. Rule 7.06(a) Comment: When a play is being made on an obstructed runner, the umpire shall signal obstruction in the same manner that he calls “Time,†with both hands overhead. The ball is immediately dead when this signal is given; however, should a thrown ball be in flight before the obstruction is called by the umpire, the runners are to be awarded such bases on wild throws as they would have been awarded had not obstruction occurred. On a play where a runner was trapped between second and third and obstructed by the third baseman going into third base while the throw is in flight from the shortstop, if such throw goes into the dugout the obstructed runner is to be awarded home base. Any other runners on base in this situation would also be awarded two bases from the base they last legally touched before obstruction was called. If it is a type A obstruction in OBR or any obstruction in Fed, then he gets a base.

What is supposed to happen is Joyce announces the obstruction, in this case Demuth saw the play, so when there was a tag he should call time, instead he showed safe. Since he saw the obstruction himself there was no reason to get together with JJ, he just awarded home. Now if it had happened while he was watching something else, he would call the out, then JJ makes the award.
