  1. The defense in your play is appealing that the runner left early. A valid appeal would be tagging either the runner or the base from which he left early, but they must do it before the runner corrects his infraction. Typically, the defense chooses to tag the base and this creates the race to the bag that looks similar to a force play.

  2. Currently on vacation at a place where there is a main stream baseball facility named after a famous, ironman baseball player. I just got interested in seeing how an umpire would get involved with it. Imagine my amazement when I found out that the Tournament Participant Fees were $750 per participant. Let that sink in with you. Add the $100 per night hotel and food and other entertainment. My gosh, I thought what I paid for my son and daughter in their sports 10-15 years ago was steep. No wonder umpires get paid $65 per game here. /s

  3. It’s not, in lieu of a complete accounting report. We don’t know what goes on to support those umpires. Are they housed? Fed & watered? Access to medical while employed? Laundry? Uniforms provided? All those things are important; furthermore, they’re overlooked variables when we start comparing these… “Destination Events” against travel, tournament, and local leagues. Tournament umpires get lured in by $75-$100 game fees, but then have to pay for their own housing, food, laundry, etc. So “to soften the dent”, assigners will put guys onto 4-6, 7 games per day! The registration fee is because there is a lack of a vetting umpire organization / association in that region Another factor is that the entity hosting the PerfectGame -brand is anticipating either a skeleton crew of support staff (TD assistants, field marshals, etc), or they’ve been burned before on umpires leaving / forfeiting games. Adjacent to that, PerfectGame is very cognizant and protective of their brand; as such, they’re trying to dissuade (or prevent) umpires from invariably wearing sub-par, sub-optimal, or competing-entity uniforms. Ideally, those uniform items should be provided; however, if anything is provided, there will be umpires who will abuse that generosity. Purchase of those items compels umpires to take care of them, to an extent. Of course, PerfectGame’s brand gets affected, later, when those same umpires invariably wear those uniform items on rival events (“Buh! I paid for these! Buh!”).

  4. The entire amateur baseball ⚾️ (and softball 🥎 ) community needs education on this simple point – any time when a batted ball (liner, pop-fly, fly, et. al.) is caught, the force is off. Thus, any subsequent outs will occur via tags, appeals, or INT by a member of the offense.

  5. In the NCAA play, the crew ruled that F1 disengaged. I trust Van Rapp's judgment on this over our grainy, distant video.

  6. I pictured it like the attached, with one exception, the glove is not touching the ground. In this photo the fielder is on his way over the fence and lands in the Boston bullpen but in our OP we have him stopping his momentum and getting back onto the field of play without ever touching the ground in DBT. It is a third world play, which is probably why we won't find definitive answers.

  7. I have a jabstep/jumpturn and a balk. MLBUM: (i) It is legal for a right-handed pitcher to begin a pickoff move to first base by first moving his pivot foot in the direction of third base provided that he makes a legal step toward first base with the non-pivot foot before throwing there and provided that the move is continuous and without interruption. A pitcher who makes such a pickoff move is considered to be in contact with the rubber when he makes his throw to first base.

  8. You should! Call it the: One Man in Blue Tournament and only assign one ump per game. Bank and double bank.

  9. This is a time play. Since R3 (the runner on 3rd) scored before R2 (the runner on 2nd) was out on the appeal, the run scores. Even though the base can be tagged to appeal R2 being out for not retouching this is not a Force.

  10. Just like the casinos. The dealers make squat and the house always wins.

  11. $65 is low. Especially with that revenue income. Tony Stark can afford it. The outfit I usually work for pays $75/game. Just checked their team fees, and their tournaments run anywhere from $700 to $2,100 with 3 to 5 game guarantees.
