  1. If you can't tell the difference between a batter drawing lines as part of his setup vs showing pitch locations, you need to gain more experience.

  2. Been lurking and reading for a while. Great forum and support group here. After reading Jax's post today about taking the test, it encouraged me to do the same. So,I did take and complete the FHSSA exam with a tentative score of 94, yay me. I ran a youth league in Central Florida for a number of years and did some umpiring. After resigning that role, I took a season off and then returned in the umpiring ranks. A few fellow members encouraged me to get HS certified, so here I am. Will continue to do some youth league and give back, but looking into growing and continuing to learn and get better. In other words, taken from this forum, trying not to suck!

  3. I don't care if he draws a house when he comes up to bat. Just don't draw a line after I call a strike.

  6. Good catch snare. My brain told me that it said batter. That is definitely not the case. Each runner other than the batter-runner (who is governed by 8-1-2) is awarded one base when: a. there is a balk (5-1-1a, 6-2-4) or a pitch strikes a runner (6-1-4); b. he is forced from the base he occupies by a following runner who must advance because a batter receives a fourth ball, or is hit by a pitched ball, or hits a fair ball which becomes dead (5-1-1f, g);

  7. So who called the 3rd out @2nd if BU thought the flyball was out 3#?

  9. I never really did a comparison, but DB catches depend on position of the feet, ball location notwithstanding. Fair/Foul catches depend on the position of the ball, feet location notwithstanding. So, yes. They are antithesis.

  10. Legal or not, there is no reason you shouldn't be taking the time to clarify what just happened for the coach in this sitch. CB signaled the out, along with an added element (out of the baseline with arms), which is spot on, but since it's not a sitch that is going to happen very often the coach is going to have a very good reason to clarify what just happened. It's not to often you have an out call when a field drops the ball. Assuming he isn't arguing for a different result taking 15 seconds to explain the call keeps you from appearing to be a redass. Simply telling a coach it's not legal to even inquire about a confusing situation is picking up the crappy end of the stick, IMHO.

  12. That's good. That change probably came from MLB.

  13. Agreed and this should of been umpiring 101 for the level of those involved. While I agree with you, it was not obvious to the MLB umpires at the time. and English 101 says "it should HAVE been umpiring 101" :P

  14. Sadly, by rule, the teams are supposed to know the situation. As for the BU, he would "have to take his medicine" and hear it from the OC.

  15. 1) Yes 2) No 3) If I hear the BU tell the coach there are two outs, and I have one out, I'm going to call time and figure out what's right. I'd rather confer for 10 seconds and get it right than have a s***storm like this possibly determine the outcome of the game... If I didn't hear him, I'll defend him from the coach and then tell him to shake it off and focus on the next play once the coach is away.

  17. I imagine its something along the lines of what Apple and Oakley do. They want to control distribution and supply.

  18. The book is wrong! In an immediate dead ball situation, the first word out if your mouth should be TIME (as a wise man said above). I umpire college, high school, and many other levels. In a HS game, it's "That's a balk! Time!" for me. No chance I'm calling TIME first.

  19. I'm thinking real hard about getting these... http://www.zappos.com/reebok-zig-cooperstown-trainer-black-white?ef_id=UKfOZQAAHzItACSH:20130118043519:s I've always said I thought the zigs have too much white on them, but these don't seem like it for some reason. I don't like the Reebok name plastered on the inside of the shoe, but I'm thinking that could be blacked out with some black shoe die.

  20. I tried on a pair plate zigs today and couldn't even put them on because they were so tight/narrow! They need to come it with wide sizes!
