They're YOUR mom.

A told her a thousand times - "They're boring.", "You'd be bored.", "It's just a bunch of little kids running around."

My mom insisted she must go and watch me "work". And of course one of the two games she went to was the most exciting game yet, with warnings being dealt out and small collisions at home (she will be going again)....

Here are a couple tidbits that occured thanks to my mom...

Me as base ump in A. My mom on the visiting sidelines...

Mom (in a "whisper" everyone can hear): "Matt!"

My thoughts: I'm going to ignore her and no one will notice

Mom: "Matt!"

Thoughts: Mom stop it now

Mom: "Matt your sock is showing! Fix it!"

Thoughts: What the hell!? REALLY!?!?

I wait a couple pitches before I "non chalantley" look down and see that my pant leg had somehow found its way into my shoe... I "non chalantley" fix it.

Mom: "You look so much better honey!"

*Visiting sideline and parents giggle*

Here is another. I was PU on this one (with the warnings and all that)...

Halfway through the game during prep pitches, my mom came to the dugout/field opening from her seat, and yelled at me

"Honey! Want something to drink?" while offering her Arnold Palmer to me.

"NO MOM I HAVE A GATORADE."

*Coaches and catcher laughs*

When that game ended and I was getting out of dodge, my mom was trying to talk about the teams bad sportsmanship while walking with me!

"What a bunch of babies! I'm glad my son wasn't on those teams!"

"MOM STOP TALKING AND WALK."

She later told me that there was a lot of chirping going on about my zone from the fans until one of the moms told them in that hushed mom-rumor whisper that everyone hears that

"She is with him somehow!!" while pointing at my mom. That made me crack up laughing that her presence cuts down the chirping.

On both occasions, I have told her before and after the game that she is not allowed to talk to me... She just laughs.

:shakehead:

With all respect to your mom tell her to keep quite and act like she doesn't know you at games. You are out there doing an job and it makes you look less independent and professional when mom is with you. However if she wants to become a spy in the stands and shut some of the spectators up, that would be wonderful as long as they don't know shes your mom.

Mom's.... what are you going to do?

At least she didn't yell out, "Go get 'em Matt. You can do it baby."

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)

But, really, your story was very very funny! One of the funniest stories I've read in the "Funny Stories" section. I think you handled things just fine. Like T-Rav said, what are you going to do?

And you never know, with a little training she could be quite the asset in the stands. Tournament directors might hire her to keep the peace!

When my mom or anyone with ANY connection to me wants to come to a game, I run the rules by them. And by rules, I mean THE rules: you do not talk to me, you do not know me, you do not walk out with me, you do not associate with me in ANY way from the time I step on the field to the time I walk off the field. It is not out of disrespect, it is simply my job to call the game, and I don't need to worry about what my mom (or anyone else) is going to say next. However, I do appreciate keeping their ears open. That is when you get (sometimes) honest reviews; when everyone can freely talk and not know there is someone among them associated with the person they're talking about.

If they do not agree to this rule, I simply do not tell them the game location or time. Problem solved!

Oh, believe me, I've tried! I think she just does it because she knows it annoys me. She'll stop eventually (I hope!)... And that last sentence... Ain't that the truth??

Oh, that is my all time favorite umpiring video! I crack up every time! I remember once at an umpire clinic there were two groups of people: The registered officials in the front, and the non-registered youth officials (including me) in the back... They showed that clip as a joke... The entire front of the room cracked up laughing.... I was the only soul in the back who was laughing. None of the other youth umps understood.... They all stared.... :bang:

That is my rule... It just doesn't work too well when that person is also your ride until you can take the road test on September 1st!! :tantrum:

Count your blessings. But have a good conversation with her. We talked about a bunch of scenerios on here and I bet some idiot would rip into your mother if they knew who she was. How would you respond if that happened? She should go and see you, she should understand what happens, she should sit nowhere near any spectators. My wife knows that if my kids want to come watch me, they are to stay far away and not interact with anyone nor are they to respond to anything they see and or hear on the field.

When my wife and I started dating, she went to one of my games. Afterwards, she asked me how I could stand all the chirping. I told her, if they ain't chirpin' I ain't doing it right. She still doesn't understand, and she hasn't watched another game yet.

I get the pleasure of umpiring WITH my mother and sister. We have yet to have any kind of problem, I would guess that most people do not even know we are related. It also helps that they are both very good umpires.

It is a great way to spend time together.

At 36 years of age my mom came out to one of my games a couple years ago (my car had broke down, was in the shop and it was an out of town game) I was calling a 15y/o AAA game. She was horrified, she got to hear all the nasty comments none of us ever hear on the field, she told me she was NEVER coming to another one and I could just take her car if that ever happened again

No problem with it here... I intend for my wife to come watch when I eventually umpire a state final at Safeco.

Moms at the game are so much worse when......

They're fat and ugly.

Jabba the Hutt was right behind me with her nasty bare feet on the fence. Remember the dude's tonails in Dumb and Dumber? OMG! Pedicurists lock the door when they see her coming. She's wearing a tent (aka sun dress) that's strapless and no bra. Yuck! Worse, she's keeping the book and wants to talk every half inning. She had this dirty, snotty, barefooted little kid in a diaper and no shirt running around and she yelled at him constantly. She needed a bath and a comb. Probably hadn't seen a toothbrush in years. Nasty, Nasty, Nasty.
