Question

South Carolina High School baseball.

Runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Batter pops out to left field (now 2 outs), runners tag up, left fielder makes a play to home, throw is wide and runner scores. Catcher makes a play to 3rd, bad throw runner safe at 3rd. Plays stop. Coach comes out of dugout onto the field and while walking to 3rd base motions to his 3rd baseman to throw ball back to 1st. First baseman gets ball tags first base and infield ump signals out now (saying runner on 1st left too early) now 3 outs. Questions: Does run that came in prior to the 3rd out count? Is the Coach allowed to step on field like that and when he did, are all plays now dead when he came out of dugout?

Run counts. R3 scored before R1 was called out for not retouching. This is a time play.

No, play is not dead even though the coach should not come out like that (though it may be less severe break in protocol depending on the level of play).

Assuming SC follows the FED verbal appeals, rule, the coach needn't even have F5 throw the ball to first.  Just ask the umpire to rule on the appeal.

@lawump has mentioned that SC has the ump call the runner out immediately without an appeal on a missed base but I'm not sure on the leaving early mechanic. The time play could be closer than we think.

We call the runner out for leaving early (or missing a base) without an appeal AT THE END OF ALL PLAYING ACTION.  So, the timing plays are usually not very close.  Of course, if the runner is trying to correct his error (i.e. he knows he left early and is actively trying to return to first to correct his error), then the defensive team does have to appeal before the runner retreats and touches first.

So in the OP was the BU remiss per SC rules?

To make sure I understand - you're saying the ump should have just called R1 out when playing action stopped...in SC only?

I suppose an argument could be made that action really hadn't fully stopped - namely, the coach came out too early to tell his player to appeal to third...keeping everything moving.

Yes, and @Lawump cleared up that it would be at the end of playing action.

That's the old FED rule -- changed everywhere(?) except SC.
