No, it says a direct line, not a straight line, but OK … A slide with the hand out from that position is still a straight line.  The part I am pointing out that is missing is FEET TO THE BASE.

This is the point where I say “We’re playing ball” and walk away from the coach because he is adding nothing new to the conversation, just reiterating the same point I already shot down.

It really isn't that hard. If part of the runner isn't in a direct line between the bases, even as written, it is a violation. This argument has become pedantic.

We all know how the NFHS wants it called. However, we decide to perform Olympic level mental gymnastics to try to say the rule doesn't say what it says. But hey do it however you wish.

On a force play, the runner must SLIDE in a straight line between the bases.

So now it’s PART of the runner?

I am with you though on this conversation!

I just want to clarify your position here. You're stating that as long as ANY portion of the runner is in a direct line between the two bases, and providing that every other aspect of the slide is legal, then there is no violation on a force play?

To be clear, I am not disagreeing with the concept or what we are trying to accomplish.  My dispute is with the way NFHS is handling this.

you should write NFHS (and drop it here).  imo.  There's nothing we can do here about the wording (even if we could all agree on what it would be.)

Our state head is on the rules committee … he quit replying to me when I pointed out that it isn’t in writing anywhere that we use courtesy runners in Illinois.
