He's a relative or friend of a player who was attending the game and they had no umpire so, he was asked to work the game. Or... He was indeed the scheduled umpire but Poncherello's motor needed to have the exhaust bearings rotated and he needed a ride home after their shift and that made him late to the game so, he had no time to change out of his work uniform.
