Im in a very high heated game on the dish, i even had another anthem stand of, which is fine. (out of county team vs inner city team), in 1) and urban area thats always out of control fan wise, 2) the seating is literally right behind , and left and right of the plate of the fence.

Im at my best for this one.  I couldnt see myself missing 1 or 2 pitches at MOST, and thats not where I got the noise from.  Its later in the game, secondar pitchers come in.  slider breaks late and outside corner.  I stay down, call ball.  (each side this is happening).  Eventually, I see the slider or curve break sooner and hit the bottom better (as the pitcher adjusted) and i start calling strikes.  An inning later i get screaming your letting them call the game.  Game ends 9-4.

fyi, a pitch came in over the plate even batter leans is arm in. Call time and strike, and i get your let them call the game from the other side.  I need something to respond to this specific if there is a good one.  I called a very good game.

Sounds it. Congratulations. You know you did well, your partner said you did well. Keep it up.

Sounds like the comments were from the stands, which is simply noise. The only consideration to explore is if it was coming from the teams.

@Umpire942, if those comments are a problem for you, summon the home team coach and tell him that he either needs to address the fan directly or get his AD to address the fan. FED has taken away an umpire's authority to eject those "outside the fences" so, there's nothing for you to "respond to".

Travel game, LL, youth tournament, Babe Ruth...basically any non high school youth game, absent any local modifications/procedures, go to the coach whose fan it is and ask them to address it. If they don't or it persists, you ask the fan to please stop and if they continue you tell them to either stop, move to another location where they cannot be heard or leave the park, please. If it persists beyond that, suspend the game, you and your crew should leave the field yourselves and call in the situation to your appropriate authority.

Brothers, we need to start sending a message that youth baseball is amateur baseball and we're not going to tolerate humps in the stands heckling anyone on the field. We're not working Red Sox/Yankees. Amateur umpires are not paid to take verbal abuse from spectators for 2 hours plus...

This 100%.

It's time to take a stand against the abuse. The path we continue to follow is not working. We need wholesale change.

Where are all the umpires?

No, we are not.  Otherwise, Boone would have been gone for that comment of unknown origin.  😛

NO, no, it is not fine.  In fact, it is very expressly NOT fine in NFHS affiliated ballgames.

Take care of that.  (Maybe you did, you did not specify.)

As for the comment, as was already asked: where did it come from?  Outside the fence?  Nothing for you to do unless it is having an impact on the field.

Dugout?  A simple stop sign is a start.  Or, “TIME! We are not doing that coach.  That’s your team warning.”  Normally, I wouldn’t jump to those levels right away, but given the atmosphere you describe, TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS.

You don’t need a witty retort.  That makes it worse in the atmosphere you describe.

'I kind of did, i talked to the last players, let the visiting coach get rid of the last guy on their team, I really did want to take a sh8t this early but by rule what is the procedure?'

'Yes this in normally employed, but since it wasnt the fact they were arguing they were valid, just the fact im somehow listening the the crowd (on both sides) if thats possible as both coaches pulled this out their pocket.  I talked to another umpire, and im not sure how he did it, but he cleared the entire play by play booth, and stands, but I do not think it was the crowd I had which was close to 50-100'

'One coach said your letting them call the game when i immediately called a dead ball strike over the plate that the player moved this elbow into it. "well you should have called it a strike, i did coach immediately after time i pointed and the count was changed on the board"

'Ok I was thinking like yes i handed them my indicator ha, but just smiled and shook head and didnt change a thing'

Nope. You don't have to tolerate it.

Stop the game and have site management deal with the abuser.

Don't continue the game until it stops. If you're working with a partner, sometimes they can help identify the sniper.

I can't speak for others, but here is my process:

Get the coach's attention and point to the menagerie.  "Only two, gentlemen!"  Hold up two fingers.  "First batter and the on-deck guy, ONLY!"

(One time I made the mistake of saying "Thing Number 1 and Thing Number 2" . . . the players thought I was referring to their uniform numbers . . . it was good for a laugh when #27 said, "But I'm the leadoff hitter!  They are batting fifth and sixth!")

If the mood is light, "All the other stray dogs belong back in their cage!"

If a coach balks at that, provide him with an explanation: safety and sportsmanship, and yes, it was a POE a few years back due to the problems it caused.  I've never had an issue after a calm, mature explanation.  If he continues to balk, issue the team warning.  If they continue to sneak out and the coach isn't helping (if he is trying, cut him some slack), issue the team warning.  Then . . . Shoot the next stray dog.

In TN I had a coach pushback on the "only 2 kids out swinging". I called him over with my lineup card out and said, "Ok Bob, that is the rule you do not want me to enforce. Now, I am going to walk over and ask Tom what rule he is choosing to not have me enforce today". He cocked his head, turned to the dugout and said "only 2 out guys". Problem solved.

Similar, I had a 2 strike ball outside. Batter starts across the plate like he struck out*. Defense chirps "Ball? Even he thought it was strike!". My retort: "you want me to let him decide when it's a ball too?"

* this was 10U - maybe 10" off the late is usually a strike in their games, I don't know.

If a coach ever complains about only have 2 batters swinging...I ask him why would we let them do it now...they can't do it in H.S., they can't do in college, and they can't do it in the MLB...so we are teaching them the right way of doing things.
