I think I kicked this one a couple of weeks ago ... But it was fun, I guess.

Runner steals second and slides despite getting there well ahead of the ball.  I hear somebody say something about a foul ball, but thought it was the runner asking.  I didn't see who said it since I had my eyes on the runner staying on the bag and F6 looking for a tag.  I shook my head.  The runner walked off the base and was tagged out.

Apparently what I heard was F6 telling the runner it was a foul ball.  The middle defense laughed, and the the runner didn't make any fuss as he hustled off.  The coach asked for time and came out to ask what happened.  I told him, "Apparently your runner listened to the shortstop."

The coach only replied with, "Why the hell would he listen to him?!"  I shrugged, and the coach walked away to go chew the kid's butt.

Looking back, I feel as if I should have called an interference call for the verbal chicanery.

Thoughts?

Mr. TMIB, you did not mention what rule set was used for your game. The violation in your scenario is called verbal obstruction and it has an entry in the 2016 BRD on pages 250-252.

Mr. GiantEngineer is correct that the ruling depends on the rule set--it is illegal in FED only. It is covered in its rule 2-22-1.

There are official interpretations and case plays available to illustrate how to officiate the infraction. I won't post them here since I know that you hate them. For those who find that stuff helpful I posted everything from the BRD entry in the following...

Ask the Umpire forum--Defense thought it was 3 outs. NFHS Rules.

The thread is dated 2/23/22 and currently is on page 23 of the forum.

I only hate them when they are in direct contradiction of what the rules says ... or when people create entirely new meanings that are not in the rule ... or when people treat them as rules ... or ...

I still want to be you when I grow up.

(It was NFHS.)

I recently had this come up in a game I was coaching. My runner was not tagged out and made it back, but it got me curious. My game was NFHS, so it is not illegal anyway (I did not know that), but let's assume it was FED and it was illegal. What would the penalty be if 1. the runner was tagged out or 2. the runner ran back to first, realized his mistake, and went back to second safely. Do they get one base?

Just put him back at 2B.
BTW- your game was FED rules

NFHS = FED

Do you mean *wasn't* NFHS?

In NFHS, OBS is a minimum of 1 base from TOI. (Rule 8-3-2) Could be more with umpire's judgement.
