Possibly unpopular opinion:  I didn't mind how this was executed.

To me, it's a form of preventative umpiring - this way, that batter doesn't get one in his ear during his next AB.  And maybe because the umpire did it early, the opponent doesn't get butt-hurt about it.

(Although, my personal biases are about to show through;  if that was hit this weekend when ECU played the University of Virginia, that batter couldn't gloat hard or long *enough* for my liking.  He could've done a F*#King dance, for all I'd care.)

HPU in Oregon State / Vanderbilt verbally moved one along today as well

The umpire didn't push the player to stop the player from admiring his homerun-- the umpire was just being sure he didn't run over the player as the umpire went down the line. ;)

And, yes -- this is done , and has been (when needed) for may years.  It's needed more, now.

Why would this be any diff than a FB ref getting in between 2 players and pushing them apart? Sometimes it requires us to manage situationally and head off any physicality. It’s not inappropriate, malicious, confrontational. In fact, it’s completely the opposite. It’s good management.

Well now that UVA is out, I was about to root for another team in Virginia that's playing well. Based on your comments I guess I'll be rooting for that Richmond school. 😜

I think this was done in a proper way, plus, you don't know what HPU was saying either .... so I have no issue here.  Preventative umpiring ... my .02

I don’t work college, but I’d never do this in a HS game. They aren’t supposed to touch us, and we aren’t supposed to touch them unless absolutely necessary. The optics here don’t look great to me. The push/contact is fairly aggressive and prolonged, and he’s running with him. I would maybe try to verbally get him to move (which he was, he wasn’t just standing there, but the umpire didn’t see if he was going to start jogging at all), but I wouldn’t do what he did here. Seems to be a bit overzealous. But again, if this mechanic is taught in college, so be it.
