Fly ball - coach tackles RF

Tie game, bottom of 10th. R3, 1 out. OBR. Deep fly ball down the RF line in foul territory. F9 moves over to make the catch. Coach in bullpen down the RF line knows that if his player catches the ball, the runner will easily tag and score and win the game. He runs over and tackles his own fielder as the ball drops foul. 

I conferenced with my partner and neither one of us could think of a rule that we could enforce here so we just called foul ball. The OHC coach was livid. What should we have called here?

Intentional INT by a person authorized to be on the field. Rule on what would have happened without the INT.  OBR 6.01(d)

I'd go with caught fly ball, tag and score the run, game over.

@SleptTillNoonLOL,@maven. That is what I would have ruled as well. The bullpen should have yelled to their player to let it drop in foul territory and no harm no foul or in this case no interference. Better yet, the fielder should have known the situation and reacted accordingly.

This actually happened?  What level was this ?  Please tell me this was daddy-coach baseball…

Why wouldn't this happen...and I would say this is more likely to happen in competitive/club/HS ball than "daddy-coach" rec league...poor player awareness aside (or coaching/teaching of said player), the coach's thinking is next-level - a rec league coach typically wouldn't have this type of awareness...he knew he didn't want his player to catch the ball and did the only thing he could think of to achieve it.   

I suspect he was likely screaming at the kid to let it go and when the kid continued to track the ball the coach felt he had no other choice.

Situational awareness is sometimes hard to overcome basic instinct...even at the pro level.   Giving up an easy fly ball out is sometimes hard to wrap your head around.  Especially if you haven't been properly coached to this type of situational awareness.  It is advanced play.  And I wouldn't expect a lot of teenagers, even those playing club ball, to inherently figure this out on their own.

 Kind of like pro NFL'ers who catch interceptions on fourth down plays, instead of batting them away, basically giving up 30-40 yards in the process...yes, some of it is self-serving, but most of the time it's just instinct.

Nah, but I have actually often wondered what would happen if it did. I just registered for the site and figured I'd make my first post a ridiculous scenario that was likely to get some LOLs but also not THAT crazy ridiculous that it couldnt happen. And I did learn something from the answers. Cheers

It has happened in football. A surprisingly number of times (ignoring the fans and silliness this video devolves into)

NFL has a rule: "Palpably Unfair Act". Nice.

Well, instead of just plain lying about it, present it as a hypothetical.   Like you said, it's crazy, but not THAT crazy...it wouldn't surprise me if it has happened somewhere.   We've heard some really ridiculous scenarios that couldn't possibly be true...only to have someone find video of the incident.

The whole narrative about you conferring with your imaginary partner isn't a good look....I seem to recall a story about a wolf...

Even though the out is bad for the defense here, calling it would set the precedent that the out would be called when it's good for the defense. I'd call it a foul ball (and possibly eject the coach).

Aww come on man. Ive posted 8-10 legit questions on things that happened to me as a guest in the past and most have led to good threads and discussions.
