I searched the forum, but couldn't find an answer specifically.

My association doesn't have any patch requirements on uniform shirts; however, I don't like plain shirts, so I put American flag patches on the left sleeve of my shirts.

I want to purchase a long sleeve shirt, but I'm not sure where to put the flag patch.  Is it still standard to affix the flag to the left sleeve, or would centered on the back be more appropriate?

Left sleeve is still appropriate. In the case of long-sleeves, to place numerals (on the right sleeve) the placement is measured from the shoulder seam to the top edge of the patch:

  • 4" for S, M & L shirts
  • 5.5" for XL & XXL shirts
  • 7" for 3XL+ shirts

So, if doing a 3" number patch (standard), the bottom edge of the patch will fall at 7" / 8.5" / 10". This becomes your lower rule line, and translates over to the left sleeve for placing the flag patch. You would want the two patches to have the same lower rule line if the viewer is looking at you from the front or back and can see both from the same angle.

We do this because on a short-sleeved shirt, the bottom edge of any patch is placed 1" above the cuff stitch.

wherever you put it, just make sure it is going in the correct direction.

I was the UIC for my local Little League a few years back.  For all my all-star umpires, I purchased shirts with the LL patch on the left sleeve, the American flag on the right sleeve, and their names embroidered a over the right breast.

I can't tell you how many people "you put the flag on backwards!" Because on the right sleeve, it 'looks' backward because the stars are on the right of the flag when worn in the proper orientation.

I've seen some placed below the HONIG'S logo on the back. That's a no-no, because NOTHING is placed above the American flag. Just an FYI, go over the logo.
