Dedication to Michael D. Hains

Question

I lost one of my best friends and fellow umpires at the end of the summer and want to dedicate this season and future ones to him. What is a good and neat way to do it? I'm thinking a patch on my shirt with his old number and initials or something. What did MLB do when Wally Bell passed? Any one have pictures of uniforms or anything where they've done something for a friend. Any ideas are appreciated.

We have had a few pass, and we put their initials on our hats.

I think MLB uses a small black patch on their sleeves.

Our association gets a small patch made with their uniform number. I'll attach a pic of one when I get home tonight. Unfortunately I have a few of those and may be getting another soon.

We had one of our District Staff umpires pass last year. The District made up up wrist bands with his name and in remembrance which we all wore.

When we lost a long time football official and chapter officer, our chapter sent us memorial silicone wrist bands. Sorry to hear about this.

Wally Bell was memorialized by his fellow MLB umpires with a black "WB" patch worn on the left sleeve for the entirety of the 2014 season. In addition, his #35 was not reissued until 2015.

We just lost a long time umpire in one of our associations to a sudden stroke a week before Christmas. A local Little League dedicated the batting cage and meeting room building in his name. Had a bun of guys out for that.

Thought about doing his strike call (which was VERY distinct and well known in this area) for the first strike I have in my first game this season.

I think that would be appropriate.
