Bases loaded. Ground ball fair to 3B. Runner stays on the base. 3B fields the ball and tags runner standing on 3B. Is that runner safe or out?

Note that if F5 tags R3, and then steps on the bag, it's a double play -- both R3 and R2 are out.

If F5 steps on the bag and then tags R3, only R2 is out -- the force is removed.

I know all the umpires know that; sometimes others get confused by it.

Out.  R3 is forced to the next base (home) via the Batter putting a ball into fair play becoming a runner.

FIFY.

Putting the ball in play is not required for a force play. (A little homework thought experiment for ya!)

Another would be an Uncaught 3rd Strike (U3K).

Infield Fly

???

An infield fly *is* putting the ball in play.  But (once it's declared) it does not result in a force (or, more accurately, the force is removed).

A good "thought experiment" answer to a different question.

I was saying that putting the ball in play does not mean there is a force in effect - there are plenty of times that putting the ball in play would not force the runners to advance. Infield fly being the first that came to my mind.

I get it, but that's not the question that was asked.  It's the opposite of what was asked.

Out.  R3 is forced to the next base (home) via the Batter putting a ball into fair play.

The original comment is stating that the batter is forced because the batter put it in fair play.

I know I didn't spell it out, but I thought it'd be implied that I was referencing the entire thread, not just the one I quoted originally.
