Jeez.  Just this week alone would provide @Rulekeep with enough footage for a 2-3 minute montage.

F2s seem to no longer own the responsibility of preventing this from happening anymore. It used to be that when this happened, F2's would immediately say, "oh $#!+, I fv<&ed up, I'm sorry, are you ok?" But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Many F2s act indifferent to PU getting smoked. This F2 did eventually come to PU's aid, but it sure wasn't his first thought. And I don't think they work hard enough to prevent this.

I was at that game.  He sure went all the way down initially.  Looked pretty bad until he started to sit up again.  The trainer came out an attended to him again at the next changeover.

Pretty good game.  Stanton had a 2-run HR and Heyward a solo shot.  Both were no-doubters.  Ended in a broken-bat walk-off double-play.

Went looking to see what a walk-off double play looked like. Ended up there wasn't a walk-off ;)

With R1 and R3 -- and this is Yadier Molina we're talking about, a really good catcher (coming from a Mets fan who has given him a four-letter middle name) -- F2 has to be aware that the ball is live and both runners could advance. That's his priority. Once the play ended, he came to the ump's aide. Had this been a foul ball, that would have been a different story.

Can you see the forest? Or are the trees blocking your view ?

Sorry, that was an attempt at a joke.  The game ends with the two retired base-runners "walking-off" the field...

Not following.

He's saying that when the PU gets smoked like that the ball/play is usually killed immediately.  So, that live ball situation you're talking about is really irrelevant.  Nothing is going to happen when the PU is put on his a$$ after taking a 95 mph pitch directly to the chest.

Correct me if I'm wrong, @ricka56...

Yes, but most of the time, an ump gets smoked with a foul ball or with no one on base. I, for one, haven't recalled seeing an ump blasted in the head with runners on base. It's natural for the catcher's first reaction to be, "is anyone running?"
