SITUATION: R3, outs don't matter, infield at normal depth. Batter hits the ball down the line, and it strikes 3B, deflecting back toward the plate. R3 is going back to the base when the deflected ball strikes him over foul ground.

For my benefit, does it matter where it hit him? Would fair territory be interference? Any code?

In fair territory, it's a fair batted ball, so yes, it's INT (same as if a ball hits a runner as he's going from 2nd to 3rd) subject to being past all infielders who have a play on the ball, which would be very unlikely in this case.

Yeah that was on FB this morning. With one guy leading the charge that it was for sure an out because of 8-4-2k. Finally someone found 5.1.1N and all those wanting an out ate their crow for lunch ... and they were satisfied. If the runner does end up getting hit while in fair territory, even after the batted ball hits the base, there should be an out by rule. Pretty sure I always see the runner in foul territory on this third world play...

The OBR rule is "

(f) He is touched by a fair ball in fair territory"

 

That last part is forgotten, much like the "except for the purpose of making play" phrase.
