:meditation: U12 top of 1st inning, using FED rules.  I am U1.

1st batter comes to the plate and I get ready and as always, I look down both lines before I call "PLAY BALL!".  I notice that there are 3 or 4 "coaches" outside of the dugout.

I tell the VHC that there can only be one coach for each box and everyone else MUST stay in the dugout.  He goes over and talks to the people standing outside and the extra people goes into the dugout.

After about two innings, I notice that they have come back out of the dugout during a close call at 1st by my partner.  I again tell the VHC to move his people.  About that time one of his people make some loud comments about the level of umpiring by me and my partner.  I tell the VHC to go calm them down and get them back into the dugout.

We start the 4th inning and they start chirping about my strike zone.  I call time and tell the VHC to calm his people down again.  About that time I hear a loud "you suck as an umpire" come out of the dugout.

I look at the VHC and I say "Choose one and tell him to go to the parking lot."  The VHC looks at me and says "seriously?"  I tell the VHC that the game is suspended until someone leaves.

I call my partner to me and we move to the mound to await the removal.  The VHC gets into an argument with his people.  After about 3 minutes, I walk over and ask him to make his choice.  He tells me that the person will not leave.

I inform the VHC that if he is unable to control his people then the game must be forfeited.

The VHC starts to argue about how I have to choose who to eject.  I eject the VHC and walked over to the 1st adult standing outside of the dugout and inform him that he is now the VHC and he has 1 minute to choose who is going to the parking lot or the game is over.  The new VHC turns and points to the next guy and said "leave or we all go home".  The guy left and the games restarted.

They ended up winning the game.  As my partner and I were leaving, the ejected coach came up and started yelling at us.  I got out my cell and called 911, he left. :hopmad:

Good so far.

I'd be seriously considering ejection of the HC or any of the offenders here. You already dealt with the situation once.

No. You either toss him or you pick the most likely offender. Doing it this way makes you look passive-aggressive.

If you're going to play this game, this is what you reap. At this point, you could have still taken the bull by the horns and asked which one it was, then ejected him yourself.

Congrats. Now you basically baited the team into another ejection. The first one wasn't good enough?

I won't say this often...you had it coming.

F for game management skills there.

Deal with it once. Warn. You didn't do that you asked.

Deal with it twice. Eject. You didn't do that.

Deal with it thrice. You get two ejections and a truckload of doodoo. You did that. And lost any respect for doing so.

Try to be a nice guy and you get burned.

Sorry to be so harsh but you asked.

Been there; done that; got the T-shirt; won't go back.

In youth ball, a coach isn't going to 'eject' one of his assistants or buddies on the field. He will ignore your request and hope you forget about it and leave him alone. This is something we need to handle ourselves.

First incident of issues with the 'entourage' on the field goes something like this:

Me: "Hey, all you, on the bench, NOW!"

Second incident: Heard chirping from the "entourage" who has reappeared on the field

Me: "You, you are gone" (I pick the ugliest one of the bunch)

HC/MGR: "hey you can't do that"

Me: Mr. MGR,  Get those people back on the bench NOW

And so the process will continue, with next incident resulting in 2 ejections...The Mgr and the next ugliest offender.

Overall, I don't mind the philosophy.  But, as someone who certainly doesn't feel he's in the top half on any "good looking" ranking, I find your ugly-ist attitude offensive.  Good day, sir.

I SAID GOOD DAY!

I eject the guys that are better looking than me. At some point I'm the best looking adulton the field.

blue23II has a good philosophy. Of course, this is assuming none of the entourage came up to you at some point and started in with "I'm an umpire too..." In which case this guy is first in line.

You know you are in trouble when you hear, "hey, I'm an umpire too".

That association doesn't have a rule on how many coaches can be in the dugout? Most of ours do, and the most is three (two coaches and a book keeper). I'm not having more than three men in there anyways, more "coaches" = more problems. At some point they become a mob. Talk to your UIC and find out if there are rules on this, if not, find out if it's OK within your association to set your own limits.

I had one game near the end of last year that there were more "coaches" then players, I cleared off all but three. Nuh-uh, lesson learned earlier in the year and homey don't play that no more.

I agree with above...just pick one.  It doesn't matter if you get the right one, what matters is they get the message and shut up.  If you get one rat, the other rats will hide or scatter.

From another thread and a sage denizen. As @BigUmpire might say.....

Bumper stickers:

  • "Eject early to eject less"-Jeapugrad
  •
  • " When in doubt, throw them out"-Bigumpire
  •
  • "You will only regret the ejection you missed"-.mstaylor
    • “Keep running the malcontents until you have only happy, well behaved people around you.â€-Bigumpire

And that point is forfeiture.

That was just too easy.  :D

You must be the loneliest umpire in Jacksonville, then.
