I wear a short model, on the inboard rung of my mask. I mates up perfectly with my chest protector, when I drop in my stance. It doesn't flap around much, and has probably saved my life. Definitely saved a couple of hospital trips.

Look, this is an dangerous hobby, and we all calculate our risks. Hell, we'd all use a raft, and never get plunked, if we had any sense, right? But we all pick and choose our risks based on lots of factors, including "cool".

I've seen here and elsewhere that a throat protector should be unnecessary if proper stance and equipment fit are utilized. I'm new to this and, after a lifetime of brandishing the tools of ignorance, am fully aware that it is a foolhardy venture at best. That said, my wife would prefer that I never have to use that long-term disability insurance we pay for.

What are all seemingly irrational decisions based on? $$$$

I think most seemingly irrational decisions are probably based on something else.

Gentlemen....changing the topic. Throat guard or not? Thanks...I searched the forums and couldn't find anything.

I didn't on my diamond cheapy mask, but I took a foul tip to the throat at the end of last year, now I wear one.

A heck of a deflection from F2's glove or hand too!

IMO, throat protectors are unneeded by no-neck fellows, built like a fire hydrant. Their mask will rest on the chest protector, thus no gap.

Here's the deal, get your gear on, and get down in your stance. Now, have someone take a picture of you from the side. Then, as they say in London, mind the gap. Check your exposure, and make that decision for yourself.

Ask @semperfi if you need one?

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Why tempt fate?

I have always been told to spend the money to get a pair of base pants and a pair of plate. If you do the bases with combo pants you look like your stuck in the 70's wearing bell bottoms

Rolando! :)... I ordered the Plate and Base Pants yesterday... The overwhelming advise is to avoid the combo...it was never a money issue.

Thank to all of you as always for your advice. I love this forum. I will be umpiring by first high school (inter squad) game on Thursday. Really looking forward to it.

Good luck and remember you'll get in less trouble calling a ball a strike than calling a strike a ball. Hitters can adjust to a big zone, pitchers cannot adjust to a tight zone.

And don't suck. Call some strikes.

LOL. I will. My mentality is that I want batters looking to hit not walk.

Okay but don't take that so far that you aren't calling balls at all.

I will try to be consistent! How's that? :)

All anyone can ask. Just don't let someone grumbling about a called strike influence the next pitch you call.

Easy to say. Hard to do.

Do whatever you want regarding the pants. I've had base and plate pants in the past but personally prefer the combo pants, which I guess according to some on here makes me a complete hack. I've worked HS varsity ball for years and numerous postseason assignments as well.....in combo pants. Wear what you're comfortable with, for me it's combo pants.

Ted Barrett said almost the same thing last Saturday at the clinic I attended. I love hearing the MLB guys philosophy of calling pitches.
