I was watching. He was called out. No one really noticed until they saw a replay. Greinke was already in the dugout when Mattingly came out to challenge.

Costas made a great point. had the initial call been correct, (u2 signaling "safe, no tag"), there's a real strong possibility F4 could have thrown to 1st for the out, which he did,  and F3 would have had plenty of time to throw to 2nd and still double up Greinke.

According to the rule experts in the broadcast booth, it is legal.

I didn't hear the whole video, but maybe what they mean is to not run into a tag.  Make the fielder take more time in an attempt to have BR reach first before the throw can get there.

A few years ago at a Jim Evans clinic it was mentioned that while crashing the catcher was allowed, there also was nothing in the book that prohibited crashing any fielder. 7.13 now covers the catcher.

It's done all the time at the base. Pay attention to the players some time instead of just watching the umpires.

 

And stop applying "high-school-think" to MLB.

please for the love of god, you do not need to point and say " on the tag".. it is the only way that runner will be out.. Unless he runs out of the baseline, but that is a different mechanic.
