Easy solution - never wear navy.

Easy for you to say ....

Michigan requires Navy for HS, ...either Navy, or Softball powder (white/navy stripes) ....

It's terrible, but oh well......what can you do?

The Navy with red undershirt is actually my favorite combination.  Why the hate for Navy?

Navy isn't liked because it's old.  It was the very first color worn when they went to "polo" style shirts after Elbeckos (really light blue button ups)

It's very wreck ballish.  When was the last time you saw any professional or college umpire wear navy?  We spend good money buying pro gear.  We spend a lot of time learning pro mechanics.  Why then ruin all that by wearing a wreck ball shirt?

Now Jeff, not everywhere in Michigan is the same.  The vast majority of guys I work with wear black or navy undershirts.  I hardly ever see red ( I think it looks good by the way).  We also wear polo blue &  the red, white & blue stripe light blue.  We also wear the light blue with the dark blue & white stripe.  As for me, I wear whatever undershirt I happen to grab, black or blue.  It would be nice if we could wear black since our assistant director of the MHSAA is a D1 umpire.  Go figure.

I've always heard you wear whatever the last sleeve stripe is.  So that's what I do.

Black shirt = white undershirt

Cream shirt = black undershirt

Navy shirt = red undershirt

Light blue shirt (softball with navy piping) = navy undershirt

Light Blue shirt (baseball with black color) = black undershirt

I would not consider any other color of shirt.

@umpire_scott - What about white under light blue? I've worn that before, but mostly use black under light blue.

When I did softball in Arizona white or navy under light blue were both deemed acceptable.  I prefer the look of the navy though so that is what I wear.

Black under black?

White! Most of the college umpires I work with wear white under black or college light/powder blue.

That makes sense.  But both states I'm umpired in required Navy for high school.  So I more associate it with High School versus Rec Ball.

This whole discussion is silly...almost as silly as caring about a MLB umpire that doesn't wear a T-shirt... :shakehead:  :fuel:

@umpire_scott

You like and prefer Navy?

We will never be partners.

Once you wear black you'll never wanna go back.

Just sayin.

Maybe I'm just to fashion conscious or metrosexual?  I just like the look of the red undershirt with the navy shirt and red piping.  I have black. it's actually my most comfortable shirt material wise.  I just like the look of the navy with the red.  But I also like the look of the cream with the black.  I can't stand how white looks under cream, they clash.  As does black with navy under it.

Posted

In my state in HS ball, navy is the required color (cream is also available, but no one has the new cream shirt), but we are required to wear navy or black underneath it. If the state were to mandate red undershirts, I would cease to do HS ball. I think red undershirts are the most hideous thing I have ever seen. And oh, btw, I have red/green colorblindness.....

Really guys?? Are you all that concerned about the color of undershirt?

The one piece of uniform only your partner may notice?

If you have the dish not even your partner will see the undershirt.

Just wear black. Problem solved.

Somebody posted that you can find the best undershirts at target. They are right! Got red navy and black for 8 bucks each way better than ump attire undershirts!
