Bad Day

Hey guys I had a bad day this past friday doing a tournament.  Is there any advice on how to get through it?  Or how to go about it so it doesn't happen again?  I missed quite a few obvious calls that I normally DO NOT MISS.

I just had a not so great day yesterday myself.

 

I sat back and analyzed what I messed up on, thought how I could do it better "better positioning" "more careful choosing of words when dealing with coaches" "reviewing the rulebook and realizing where my mistakes were made and confirming the rules"

 

And in the end remember that you are a good umpire, you are working to get better, and you will nail it next time.

 

Even pros have their off days.

Why do YOU THINK you missed them? Possible mental or physical distractions at the time?

Most everytime I miss something I know I should have got, it's because bad timing has slipped back into my game.  If you suspect bad timing, make a conscious effort to slow it down.

I often wonder about when umpires post on here that they missed obvious calls?  How do you miss an obvious call?  If you saw it and it was obvious then you would have called it correctly I would presume.  If you didn't see it then how would you know it was obvious?

 

Now I feel like I've had a bad day when I'm unsure of several calls because I was not focused and/or my timing was off.

Major league umps have bad days, give up perfect games etc.  Don't dwell on it.  Relax.

I had a bad game a few weeks ago...I only had 4 hours of sleep the night before.  Even though I was amped up (it was a playoff game) and didn't feel tired or sleepy, my mental acuity and my eyes were just not at peak performance.  I knew I was struggling, the coaches knew I was struggling, my partners knew I was off and it was just one of those bad days.  You just have to move on and get past it.

Try your best not to snowball what already happend. Missed a call first inning dont take it with you all game. Try to just make best call every play. Snowballing can make a bad game worse.

THank you guys so much I greatly appreciate it.  I reviewed it and I believe my mechanics were not sharp and lack of sleep played a huge role in it as well.

I wasn't meaning to do either (support or be negative).  I think sometimes when some of us here a lot of chirping we assume we missed a call.  And when the chirping is real loud by many people, we assume it was obvious.  My point is that I think the OP was being too hard on himself and although he may have missed a few they were probably not as obvious as he thought.  If he knew they were obvious then he would have probably go them right.

 

I was working tonight with a less experienced umpire.  I was in "C" and he called a pitch that was just off the plate a strike to ring a kid up and end the inning.  It should be noted that I would have had this pitch as a strike every single time.  It was maybe a ball outside and this was Freshman Legion.  He hesitated before ringing the kid up (probably twice as long as most of his other strike calls).  A few of the fans commented about the pitch.  My partner called my over after the inning and asked what I thought of the call.  I told him I thought it was a strike, but that when he hesitated longer it gave the fans the impression that he wasn't sure of his call.  He told me whenever he hears fans or coaches complain about a call he questions himself so he likes to get confirmation from his partner.
