Injured Player Substitution

The #2 batter for the offense has become injured and the coach wants to put in a sub for him. However both eligible subs are currently playing for starters (8th & 9th batting spots).

 

My question is .. Can a starter re-enter in his original batting position so that the sub that replaced him can bat in the #2 slot for the injured player or can a starter, after re-entering, bat in the #2 slot for the injured player.

No. A sub can only enter the game once. The starter may reenter under certain rulesets, but when the starter returns to his original spot in the batting order, the sub is done for the duration of the game.

Some rule sets allow a team to continue with 8, taking an out each time the missing spot in the order comes up.

 

No re-entry rule I've heard of permits a player to re-enter in a different spot in the lineup, even for injury.

I believe regular season little league allows a stater to re enter in a different spot in the order as long as the player who came in for has met min. playing requirements.

Indeed. it's amazing how many travel games I do and I ask at the pregame what ruleset we're using and I get a look from the coaches like I have 3 heads.

 

BTW, the Little league rule is 3.03.

 

A player in the starting line-up who has been removed for a substitute  may re-enter the game once, in any position in the batting order, provided:

1. His or her substitute has completed on time at bat and;

2. has played defensively for a minimum of six (6) outs.

Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth tournament play allows re-entry as follows (not verbatim):

Sub re-entry is permitted in case of injury or ejection and all subs have been used.  Selection of the re-entering sub is made by the opposing manager and the player who leaves because of the injury cannot return.

LL rule is similar. If there are no eligible subs the opposing manager picks who can re-enter.  No restriction on whether the player leaving can return (unless ejected) if otherwise eligible.

When I become "Emperor of the Universe" I'm going to decree that ALL baseball be played under the same rules.

 

Did a "Nations Baseball" tournament last weekend.  They have their own rulebook that defaults to OBR with certain over-rides.  One of those over-rides allows a team that is roster-batting to "skip" the AB of player who leaves the game due to illness or injury.  If that injury occurs while he is running the bases, the last recorded out takes his place on the bases, as if courtesy running for F! or F2.

 

In top of the 1st inning a player sprained an ankle sliding into 2nd base.  As his team was roster batting, that's what we did...last recorded out took his place on 2nd, and we skipped him in future AB's.  Coach of the other team pitched a minor complaint, and insisted on getting an interpretation from the UIC/Tournament Director.  He verified our ruling.

 

In the bottom of that same inning the #3 hitter came to bat with a bloody nose.  It was a real gusher.  We allowed them several minutes to get it stopped, but it soon became apparent he couldn't continue.  Coach asked what his options were.  They had 10 players, but were only batting 9.  I told him "you'll have to use the sub, but remember the starter can re-enter once he gets cleaned up".  Turns out the bloody player was his best hitter, and the sub was his ace pitcher.  This was an elimination game, and coach wanted BOTH to be available in the late innings.  "Coach" I said "it's a tough break, but there's no way both the starter and the sub who replaced him can be in the game at the same time."

What T? -- the 6- and 7-year-olds have to pitch from 60' and hold the runners on.

All right, all right.

Perhaps certain accommodations can be allowed for distances, and I'd not suggest 9 year olds ought to have to hold runners.

on, but some of this crap gets ridiculous.  Every sanctioning body and local association seems to think they have to re-invent the wheel.

Not to worry, anyway.  My wife just broke the news to me last night...it's highly unlikely that I'm going to become Emperor of the Universe anytime soon:(
