Yah, @zoops, I think you're right. But they're not likely to call it with the runners standing right next to each other. Too cheap: they'll go with the expected call: one of them is out.

I agree with you guys that it would be kind of a cheap call.  Would be a tough explanation if a coach came out and wanted it called though as I think the rules would support 2 outs.

Could you explain this a little more?  A runner certainly can go back to first from second...is it because he started the play on second base that he can't retreat to first?

He didn't end up there legally.  I believe it was determined after the fact that the umpires did not rule correctly on that play. As @noumpere stated above, 7.01 Comment covers it.
