OK....
Varsity double header yesterday, second game I am on the plate.

Runner on first one out, the batter attempts to bunt a pitch that is outside.... He leans into the pitch and stretches his arms out to bunt the ball, realizing it is not a good pitch he pulled the bat back, at the same time the catcher is slightly stepping forward and going for the pitch because r1 is going to second.

In the process when pulling his bat back the batter hits the catcher's glove..... I do not see it,.... all I know is that the catcher dropped the ball on the transfer.

Then, from the dugout I have coach yelling for interference because on the pull back he hit the catcher's mitt.

I don't see it so I don't have anything. The next pitch he grounds out to shortstop and then the next better pops out.

On the coaches way to third base for the top of the next inning he stops to discuss the issue calmly.

I tell him I did not see it so that's why I did not call it. He said he wanted batters interference on the pullback of the bunt. I tell him.... Both players are doing their jobs in that situation & that could have been a situation for catcher's interference and I told him that he probably would not of liked that call :-)

In the post game my partner and I discussed the issue and came to the conclusion that in this situation it was nothing, he agreed with my call

This had no bearing on the game however I'd like to throw this situation out to everyone

What do you have?

Sounds like BI to me Jeff.

He made "any other movement which hinders the catcher's attempt to play on a runner."

It can't be CO because he didn't make an attempt hit or bunt the ball.

The more and more I thought about it, I realized. The problem is I didn't see it

Thunder. I've got Batter Interference on that one if I saw it.

A couple years ago I had team that seemed to teach this play, or something similar. The batter would stick his bat out like he was going to bunt. And then brought it straight back into the catchers mitt trying to get a CI.

The manager came unglued when I said it was nothing. He wanted CI, but I said no because the batter wasn't swinging and he was not attempting at the ball on the bunt. It happened in a hurry. Same kid tried it again later in the game.

If there was a runner going, I would have had a BI though. All depends on the situation and sequence of events.

It's an additional focus on a bunt w/ runners on that I learned for sure!

If it was just a normal "pull back", can an case be made for backswing interference? No out, but return the runner.

Remember that backswing INT in FED is tied in directly with BI (same BI penalties apply). OP said Varsity, so I assume FED *shrug*

of course Varsity is FED ........

I don't think "backswing INT" applies to a bunt / pull-back?

Remember, "backswing" isn't. It's follow-through, which is not what we're talking about.

Here's another thought: what if F2 is over the plate to receive the pitch when the contact occurs?
