Machine Pitch Tips

I am a teen who just recently became interested in umpiring and am assigned to two games this weekend. I am extremely nervous, and would like any tips that anybody would be so kind as to offer. Thanks.

first off do your best to calm down......second as a young umpire remember that your in control of the game.....thats not an excuse to be arrogant but at the same time make sure everyone is aware of that.....third follow the ball and expect the unexpected you'll see some weird stuff in a game with kids this age.....good luck and don't suck

Look the part, be professional, and stick with the calls you make.

Remember that at that age they are still learning the game and that the game should be FUN! (Despite what the parents/coaches sometimes think.)

Coach/Machine Pitch in instructional and not competitive, and therefore should NOT have an umpire!

Call time when the lead runner is no longer attempting to advance, watch for obstruction, do your best on fair/foul from the bad angle, and do not trust a Single thing those coaches tell you about rules. Go by what you know in the book and have fun!

You are the authority!! Coaches may try to use your age against you, and manipulate you because of your age. Don't let them.

Did you guys get your postseason assignments yet for Tee Ball? I was assigned a Round of 64 game!! I'm PUMPED!!

Long term: If any local associations offer umpiring clinic, attend. As you can probably tell from the topics and discussions on this forum, there is much to learn about the rules, interpretations, mechanics, game control. Good luck and have fun.

 

Short term: You are the umpire and your judgment will govern, despite what coaches, parents and other adults may say or argue. Don't let them push you around or take advantage of your youth. Be polite but firm: you saw the play, you made the call, then tell them that's enough, so let's play ball. And hustle.
