Does everyone use a TP? I don’t.

I have an extension on my masks and for some reason have never taken one to the throat.

I hate 'em, so no, you're not the only one. I never really took one to my throat either Until!!!!!

Then one did get me and Fractured MY Larynx!!!!!

Don't wear one, that is your choice.

Just hope you have the same luck I did and get to live to talk about why you should wear one.

I now wear a HSM and a Hockey Style TP. I'm an HSM guy all the way. But I duck my head out of instinct if a ball is coming straight for me, which has happened once in my short career, but I don't doubt it will again, and the chin of the helmet protected my throat. (Besides, an MLB guy took a foul ball into the throat while wearing an HSM and walked off the field with his wits about him, and for the rest of the season he didn't use a TP.) Don't flinch and I wouldn't use what an MLB umpire does to justify what you do.

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk I wasn't trying to justify myself, I was just saying that it is possible to get hit in the throat incredibly hard and be mostly okay. Also.

Don't flinch? Sure, I'll just automatically stop a reflex, no problem. Flinching hasn't done me harm yet.

Mostly OK? So that one time it hits you and causes permanent injury ok?

Oh There is no reason to flinch!!! If you do you will get hurt!!!

Great advice from Jax! LOL

Well, good luck to you then. Overcoming instincts (like flinching) is part of one's development as an umpire - when you flinch, you actually reduce your protection level and most of the time you stop watching the ball. I had probably my worst umpire injury ever my first year when I flinched and as a result took an uncaught pitch right to the side of my head. Strange, to that point flinching hadn't "done me any harm yet" so of course it must have been correct :). Once you get hit somewhere you'll figure out a way to protect yourself. I thought I didn't need a TP once too and then I took a bounced 58-footer to the throat, and the next day my mask had a throat protector. Also, that made me evaluate my stance and posture behind the plate as that contributed to me getting hit as well (and I found that out here by taking the advice of more experienced umpires than I was). But since you have it all figured out, maybe my story and advice helps someone else on here. A throat protector may not be cool, but it is smart.

Trust your gear OR call volleyball!

You can get injured, even in volleyball.  :smachhead:

How?  You drop the money you stole and hurt your back picking it up.

I don't need health insurance, I never get sick.

I don't need life insurance, I haven't died even once.

I don't need car insurance, I'm a great driver.

Why stop smoking? I haven't gotten lung cancer.

Some have taken a baseball and looked to see if there was a hole that a baseball could get through...and it may look like there isn't any way a ball could get through to your neck. But a baseball, at high velocity, (the condition we care about)  can squeeze into places that you didn't think were possible.

Yeah, of course, I share my opinion and start a wildfire. Who'da thunk.

I haven't worked too many games yet, so obviously I don't have the apparently needed experience of getting popped in the throat. When I worry about it, I'll outfit my gear as I see fit.

It has always intrigued me that some umpires who spend $30 on a cup to prevent a case of non fatal case of crushed nuts but will not wear a $5 plastic TG to lessen the chance of an injury that 30% of the time is fatal within 1 minute of the injury.

As I said do what you want.

I know I never want another Doctor to tell me how lucky I was to:

1) Be alive.  Because no paramedics would have gotten to me fast enough to save me if my lyrnx had collapsed.

2) That I did not need a tracheotomy done.

3) That I did not require surgery.

Oh

No matter what you do, injures will find you.

I hurt my back Monday morning just picking something up off the living room floor in our house Monday.

Wife said she heard a loud pop when it happened

Went to Urgent care with the assistance of two friends loading me into our car so my wife could drive me there.

We really considered calling 911 for a Ambulance.

Pain was so bad it brought tears to my eyes.

They did XRays and it showed some problems of missing cartilage in a couple of areas.

I was told I had degenerative disc disease back in late 80's.

Returned for follow up today, since there was no improvement and the meds I was given for pain were not working.

Also feeling in legs and feet are not the same.

Seeing Ortho Surgeon tomorrow and will be demanding a MRI of my back.

Right now I will be happy to be Umpiring come March.

In all the times I have had back problems I have never had the pain and trouble I am having now.

I am having to use my Mother In Laws walker to get around the house when I have to walk.

Gladly accepting all prayers sent my way.

I would have hated to think what it would have looked like if my back gave out like that while brushing off HP.

Thoughts and prayers on a speedy recovery from the back issues. I've been dealing with some back issues of my own this month. (Sacroiliac joint.). It's no fun, however, minor compared to what you must be feeling. Get well!!

Let's see .... how about this ....

Obviously you've never been hit by a car, right?   So if that's the case, it's ok to play in traffic?

Safety is a very personal issue. You see it all the time, roofers with no safety harnesses on, welding with no goggles, using power equipment with no glasses and on and on. Most people don't learn until injury happens, I have seen it to many times. I have no problem with it as long as it doesn't affect me and when injury happens please don't complain about it. I feel bad for the person that protects themselves and still gets hurt. Then we get the almighty lawsuit because it must be somebodies fault I got hurt not saying that you Rulekeep will sue just a general statement. Wear what you want just stay safe

"crushed nuts" is not Fatal?

Who would WANT live after this injury?

Dang Lou - I hope it's nothing that requires surgery. My prayers are with you.

Speaking of TP and neck protection.

Did a game alst night and took a Foul ball that hit my Gold on the Right Shoulder. Took a weird bounce and hit me on the bone right behind the ear.

Weird. Still hurts.
