I have two masks:  Diamond DFM-UMP and a new Diamond iX3 Feather Weight.

I have an old 6 inch Rawlings throat protector which is wide enough and long enough to hit my CP when the ball strikes it.  I am attaching it to the very bottom of the mask extension. I'm comfortable with that.

But I recently bought an All-Star magnesium because I liked the look, and I've also tried to attach a few other 6 inch throat protectors at a clinic onto the bottom of my mask, and here is the problem:

When I'm in my stance behind the plate, it seems that if the ball hits my throat guard, it would swing back and hit my throat (causing serious injury).  I guess I have a long neck. And I've tried attaching them different ways, but no luck.

Perhaps I'm looking at this the wrong way, but I could use some of your expertise.

Before answering, put your mask on, get into your stance, hold your head still, and swing the throat protector back. Where does it hit?

If it's swinging back and hitting your neck, yeah, don't place it there.  For most, a 6-inch TG on the inside (2nd rung) of the mask will hit the CP when hit, but certainly not a universal truth, Mr. Brontosaurus.

Pictures please ....

throat guards should be placed on the bottom rung (underneath) the throat extention, NOT to the bottom of the throat extension itself.   Please view the MASK PORN thread for TONS of pictures of proper TG placement

I looked at all the photos on that thread and tried attaching the TP at different spots on the bottom of the mask with the same results.

How tight to your neck is your CP?  I have the All-Star FM25ti (didn't know there was a magnesium model) and have a 4" TG on the lowest rung under the mask's throat extension, and have no issues - hits my CP every time.  But, my CP is pulled up very tight to my neck, I can feel the pad against my throat.

I also have a +POS ZRO-G and the same TG and placement does not work well for me on that mask  I actually go without a TG on that mask (it is my backup and is rarely worn)

You may be leaning over to much. Try keeping your back more straight up. Like if you are sitting.

Does everyone use a TP? I don’t.

I have an extension on my masks and for some reason have never taken one to the throat.

I have a new Unequal CP which is very snug and low profile. It's pulled up to cover my collar bones. If I pull it up any more, it hits my adams apple, so I think it's in the right position.

You are asking for trouble. I have been knock out cold 2 times from shots to the Jugular. Semper Fi had a major problem from getting hit on the throat.

Good advice here.  Somewhere on Ump-Attire there is a blog entry with pictures which shows how a proper stance can make the use of the TG more effective.

I think he is referring to the Magnesium All-Star metal throat guard.

Gotcha.  I need to learn how to read better...

Based on what he presented 2 years ago at the Mid-American Umpire Clinic <---Shameless Plug, Jim Kirk would disagree with you.  He told those in attendance that MLB medical staff (I think that's who he referenced) feels the throat guard needs to go at the bottom of the throat extension to maximize protection.

Having said that, I wear mine as you proscribe.

I've been spending part of my morning with the mask and throat protector on, looking into a full length mirror and trying to adjust my stance. You are right! I was leaning over a little too much. When I came up slightly (sitting back), the TP hits my CP instead of my neck. I only had to make a small adjustment and will have to remember to do this during my games. Unfortunately they won't start until the end of March. Thanks for the advice!

I never really took one to my throat either Until!!!!!

Then one did get me and Fractured MY Larynx!!!!!

Don't wear one, that is your choice.

Just hope you have the same luck I did and get to live to talk about why you should wear one.

I now wear a HSM and a Hockey Style TP.

I now wear a HSM and a Hockey Style TP.I'm an HSM guy all the way. But I duck my head out of instinct if a ball is coming straight for me, which has happened once in my short career, but I don't doubt it will again, and the chin of the helmet protected my throat. (Besides, an MLB guy took a foul ball into the throat while wearing an HSM and walked off the field with his wits about him, and for the rest of the season he didn't use a TP.)

Don't flinch and I wouldn't use what an MLB umpire does to justify what you do.

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk I wasn't trying to justify myself, I was just saying that it is possible to get hit in the throat incredibly hard and be mostly okay. Also.

Don't flinch? Sure, I'll just automatically stop a reflex, no problem. Flinching hasn't done me harm yet.

Mostly OK? So that one time it hits you and causes permanent injury ok?

Oh There is no reason to flinch!!! If you do you will get hurt!!!
