Argument with Opposing Coaches

Working a 14U USSSA championship game behind the plate. It's a tight game and in the bottom of the 4th notice the Home HC on third begins talking to Visitor AC. The talking escalates and before I know it they are a few inches from eachother's faces yelling at one another.  I call time and immediately walk down the third base line. They calm down when they see me coming. I point to both dugouts and issues warnings and say not talk to talk to the other team anymore.  Game continues without any other issues.

 

I'm a young umpire and understand how to handle coaches arguing with me, but not much experience with coaches arguing with coaches.

1) Any advice on how to handle these situations? (it could have easily escalated)

2) DId the coaches deserved to be ejected immediately?

This happens occasionally and I think you handled it perfectly.  Any jawing back and forth between opposing coaches or players at that level needs to be addressed immediately.  Good use of judgement giving a warning first.

If there weren't any further issues and they both listened to your warnings, then you handled it fine.

You get this from time to time. You did fine, they don't listen, dump them, they will listen next time.

This would be a good reason that coaches should be in the dugout. In this case on coach would have had to have been very load to have a converstion..

I'm not a big fan of the restriction... I think in most cases, it is just used inappropriately as a second warning, and I don't like that.

 

THIS, however is a great time where a restriction would come in handy, if available in the rules... The coaches probably won't bother each other if their both in their dugouts. If they do, toss 'em.

It really depends on how/what the argument is about, where it takes place, how loud it is, and what age the kids are.  Based on OP, I believe the proper action was taken.

I once had opposing managers (in a 10U USSSA Tourney game) argue loudly between innings, right out in front of the plate, throwing around words/phrases like, "I'll kick your a$$," and "A$$hole."  When the feuding came to a stop (I wasn't about to interrupt this heated exchange), I calmly ejected them both.  One coach repsonds (like a 5 year old), "But he started it!"...I still laugh about it to this day.

Correct about the whiners.  One of the coaches complained about every little thing the whole game but you have to love karma when they give up 7 in the last to lose
